Tomonobu Gomi Equals Japanese 100 Fly National Record At SC Championships

67th JAPANESE SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Day two of the 2025 Japanese Short Course Championships brought us our second national record of the competition.

Following up on Mizuki Hirai‘s Japanese benchmark and World Junior Record in the women’s 50m backstroke yesterday, Tomonobu Gomi fired off a new mark in the men’s 100m butterfly.

22-year-old Gomi posted a swift time of 49.54 en route to taking the gold, representing one of two sub-50-second swimmers of the field.

Joining him under the barrier was Naoki Mizunuma who produced 49.76 as the silver medalist, while Takaya Yasue rounded out the podium in 50.08.

As for Gomi, his podium-topping effort matched the current Japanese standard of 49.54 retired ace Takeshi Kawamoto put on the books at the 2020 edition of these championships.

A split comparison of the two performances is below:

Gomi’s 49.54 NR Kawamoto’s 49.54 NR
22.82 22.74
26.72 26.80

The World Aquatics database doesn’t list a previous personal best for Gomi; however, his performance now ranks him third in the world on the season.
