WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNCW captured 31 races, dropping just one, as the Seahawks swept visiting Gardner-Webb in college swimming action on Saturday at Allen Natatorium.

The Seahawks improved to 1-1 on the men’s side (209-87) while the women won their season debut (206-71). GW, meanwhile, dropped to 0-2 on both sides.

Multiple-event winners for the Seahawk women included Olivia Corbi (200 Free, 500 Free), Gil Shaw (100 Breast, 200 Breast), Maeren McGonigal (200 Fly, 200 IM) and Cameron Snowden (50 Free, 100 Fly).

For the men, Wilson Tuttle (200 Free, 500 Free), Mason Hetzell (100 Breast, 200 Breast), Nathan Jao (50 Free, 100 Free), Andy Commins (100 Fly, 200 Fly) and William Carrico (200 Back, 200 IM) all won twice.

Snowden added four relay wins while McGonigal and Jao added three apiece.

Up next for UNCW, diving visits East Carolina on Oct. 25 and both the diving and swimming programs host William & Mary and Queens on Nov. 1.

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Gardner-Webb swimming team fell in both the men’s and women’s overall team scores as weekend action wrapped up at UNC Wilimgton on Saturday evening, but comes home with a series of solid individual runs

GWU opened the day with a second place run in the women’s 200-yard medley relay. Once again, the group of junior Slawka Ndubuisi, sophomore Dakota Townley, senior Hannah Routh, and this time with freshman Jenna Valentine landed on the podium, clocking in with a time of 1:45.78

The Runnin’ Bulldogs featured heavily in the women’s 100-yard butterfly, where Routh, Valentine, sophomore Jillian Hawkins and sophomore Lauren Barrick all finished back-to-back-to-back. Valentine was second in 56.72 seconds, Routh third in 57.29 seconds, Hawkins fourth in 57.37 seconds, and Barrick fifth in the event after clocking a time of 1:03.31

Nudubuisi later competed solo in the women’s 100-yard freestyle, where the junior notched a time of 52.32 seconds to take second place. Gardner-Webb teammate senior Sara-Michael Jann was fourth in the event, with a time of 54.40 seconds.

Gardner-Webb was also second in the men’s 200-yard medley relay. The team of junior Carter Redelman, senior Justin Bender, sophomore Porter Lane and junior Jacob Jensen touched the wall in 1:30.88, a full one-second ahead of the third place finishers from UNC Wilmington

Individually, Townley and Bender both scored runner-up finishes later in the day, In the women’s 100-yard breaststroke, Townley was just a half second off the top spot, finishing in second place with a time of 1:03.54. She would further take second in the women’s 200-yard breaststroke in 2:20.52. Over in the men’s 100-yard breaststroke meanwhile, Bender recorded a time of 56.75 seconds to take second.

Valentine was also among the strongest individual finishers of the day for the Runnin’ Bulldogs, scoring second in the women’s 200-yard butterfly. The Boone, N.C. native competing in her home state put down a time of 2:05.91, also just ahead of GWU teammate Hawkins who was fourth with a time of 2:11.20

Fresh off a school record run on Friday night, freshman Victor Curry put down a time of 4:31.63, including a 26.38 second final split, as he took second place in the men’s 500-yard freestyle race.
