The 8th Japanese Adult Swimming Championships are nearly upon us, with action kicking off Saturday, November 1st.
A host of key domestic talent is set to take to the Mie Kotsu G Sports Forest Suzuka as a follow-up to racing at the 2025 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup circuit in the United States.
28-year-old former world record holder Ippei Watanabe is scheduled to compete, taking on his signature breaststroke events.
In the World Cup, Watanabe’s highest finish came in the 200m breaststroke at the final stop. There in Toronto he produced a time of 2:03.96 to place 4th overall.
Daiya Seto, Katsuhiro Matsumoto and Yamato Fukasawa are also expected to compete this weekend. 25-year-old Fukasawa reaped 200m breaststroke bronze in the aforementioned Toronto race, putting up a mark of 2:03.82.
A notable men’s entry is Shoma Sato, the now-24-year-old breaststroke ace who has been quiet the past few years.
Sato was the breakthrough star in 2021 who ripped a new national record of 2:06.40 in the LCM 200 breast. He looked primed to do damage at the 2020 Olympic Games (postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic) but finished just 10th and out of the final. He then missed making the Japanese squad for last year’s Games in Paris.
