American rising star Audrey Derivaux shattered the Championship Record in the girls’ 200 back, throwing down a time of 2:06.99 to blow past the previous record time of 2:07.45.
While not a personal best time, Derivaux’s performance knocked almost half a second off of the record and marked the first time a female swimmer has broken 2:07 at the World Juniors Championships.
The former Championship Record was set by fellow American Regan Smith back in 2017.
Derivaux was 2nd at the 50 tonight, taking it out in 30.03 behind teammate Charlotte Crush‘s opening split of 29.64. Derivaux trailed Crush by half a second at the 100 mark before closing the gap on the third 50 and blowing by Crush on the final stretch. Derivaux split 32.48 on the final 50, which was nearly a second faster than Crush’s closing split (33.38).
Despite having a faster opening 100 during tonight’s race in Otopeni, Derivaux was three-tenths of a second off of her lifetime best time of 2:06.68, which she posted earlier this season at Sectionals in Indianapolis.
Split Comparison
| Smith – Old CR | Derivaux – New CR | Derivaux – Lifetime Best | |
| 50 | 29.92 | 30.03 | 30.19 |
| 100 | 1:01.49 (31.57) | 1:02.00 (31.97) | 1:02.25 (32.06) |
| 150 | 1:34.17 (32.68) | 1:34.51 (32.51) | 1:34.46 (32.21) |
| 200 | 2:07.45 (33.28) | 2:06.99 (32.48) | 2:06.68 (32.22) |
One of the United States’ top up-and-coming stars, Derivaux has been making waves on the swimming scene for the last few seasons. Her best time from Sectionals back in March would rank her 6th in the world this season and marks the #4 performance of all-time in the girls’ 15-16 age group in the U.S.
Derivaux’s victory in the 200 back marks her second gold medal of the meet; she won the 200 fly (2:07.57) on day 2 to bring home the first medal of the meet for Team USA.
