Eight Records Fall on Day Two of USMS Masters Nationals – Day 2 Recap

The second day of the 2025 Masters Summer Nationals played host to eight broken records in Federal Way, six of which are AQUA Masters world records.

(AQUA Masters world records can only be set at meets sanctioned by a World Aquatics member federation or organized by World Aquatics. USMS national records are recognized separately.)

In the men’s 35-39 200 breaststroke, Trip Valley Aquatics Brandon Fischer (36) took down the AQUA Masters world record in 2:16.38, taking down Ryo Kobayashi’s 2024 time of 2:20.11.

Fischer took the win in the 35-39 age group by over 13 seconds.

Fischer owns a lifetime best of 2:11.91, set back in 2019 while he was 30.

Palm Beach’s Daniel Lotano took down a two-year USMS record in the men’s 45-49 50 backstroke, clocking 27.60 to lower the previous mark held by Chuck Barnes at 27.73. Lotano was the fastest performer over the age of 35 in the event.

Cecilia McClosky, 75, clocked a new Aqua Masters and USMS record in the women’s 50 back in 38.17, shattering the previous mark held by Diann Uustal at 40.08, set nearly four years ago.

1976 U.S. Olympian Rick Colella, 74, recorded a double world and national record performance in the men’s 70-74 division. He took down the 100 freestyle records in 1:02.80, bettering Michael Mann’s 2024 time of 1:03.01, and followed with a 5:38.72 in the 400 IM, crushing Lawrence Day’s 2019 mark of 5:55.97.

Colella now owns eight USMS and AQUA Masters world records in the 70-74 age group.

Puget Sound’s Charlotte Davis, 75, picked up the win in the women’s 75-79 100 free in 1:13.13, a time good enough for new USMS and Aqua Masters world record marks; the time tops her own marks set just under three months ago at 1:14.97.

Hubie Kerns, 76, swam to over a 15-second victory in the men’s 75-79 400 IM, touching in 6:32.00, taking down the AQUA Masters world record* previously held by Mike Freshley from 2016 of 6:34.91

Closing out the day’s records, Alexander Bezugily, 40, established a new USMS national record in the men’s 400 IM with a 4:45.92, breaking Eric Christensen’s 2018 time of 4:47.82.
