South Africa’s Pieter Coetze had a heck of a two weeks to round out the summer, competing at the 2025 World University Games in Berlin before heading to Singapore to race in the 2025 World Championships. In Singapore, Coetze became a world champion in the 100 back, touching for gold in 51.85, one of the fastest performances in history. He also earned silver medals in the 50 and 200 back, breaking African records in both.
We discuss Coetze training for the 400 free, only training LCM year-round, and SwimSwam excluding Pieter from the 100 back final in our 100 back preview 😅

As always, great podcast from Coleman Hodges going through several topics with Pieter that swimming fans are curious about.
@Coleman, I would like to know you if you can ask Alexy, when you bring him to the pod, about what happened last year in Paris with Pan and the story of Jack splashing water on Pan’s coach during warmups before the 4*100 free final.
Because last year you did a podcast with Chalmers, where you asked him about him ignoring Pan while trying to say hello and he addressed the situation and how they spoke afterwards and resolved the issue.
But Alexy didn’t do a pod with you last year, so it will be interesting to hear his… Read more »
Probably my favorite interview and how he enlightens us with his (and his coach, Rocco) perspective!
Love how he believes in his coach and going to both WUGs and Worlds was a positive! Love how this year he trained mostly in mid group and never with sprint group! Love how SA doesn’t ever do a training camp before their international meets. (I know SA is one of the poorer federations, but never an issue for Peter). Love how he trains 365 days a year long course and has no short course pools available! He comes from a big team. There are 6ish people per lane and in the USA, many elite swimmers complain if they have to circle!

Also good sense of humor rubbing it in at the end that SwimSwam didn’t have Peter in top 8 predictions in 100 back and he won Gold! “Maybe next time……”
They didn’t have Ndoye-Brouard in their top 8 either. So, it was a pretty big miss. But that race was very fast this year and quite competitive.
That race was insanely tough to pick when they made the pick, other than Ceccon everyone they picked had been faster this year than Pieter’s best time ever at the time of the article. The huge breakthroughs were impressive in such a tough field-5 of the top 10 performers all time came from this year’s worlds.
