Victor Johansson Shatters His Own Swedish National Record with 7:44.81 800 Free

2025 World Championships

Sweden’s Victor Johansson enjoyed a stellar race in the men’s 800 free this morning, posting a lifetime best 7:44.81 to shatter his own national record in the event.

Johansson dropped over two seconds to take down his former record of 7:47.04, which he set at the World Championships in Doha in 2024.

His performance landed him in the #5 spot heading into the final, seeded .79 behind American distance star Bobby Finke.

Johansson took the race out in 56.76, almost half a second faster than his opening split from Doha. He continued to build on that momentum, holding mid-58s across the board until the final 100, when he brought it home strong in 56.89.

Johansson will face tough competition in the final tomorrow night, with the likes of Finke, Australia’s Samuel Short, Tunisia’s Ahmed Jaouadi and Ireland’s Daniel Wiffen all joining him in the top 8.

In addition to the 800, Johansson already placed 4th overall in the 400 free in a best time of 3:44.68 and is set to race the 1500 free later on this week.
