Luke Barr Closes Out Justin Futures with Dominant Win in 200 IM – Day 4 Recap

Indiana’s Luke Barr closed out the Justin Futures in blistering fashion, touching in 2:02.75 in the men’s 200 IM (slower than his all-time best of 2:00.37), over five seconds ahead of Ethan Hammontree at 2:08.97 (nearly a second and a half better than his previous best of 2:10.46).

Barr, who owns the fastest 100 IM (SCY) in history at 45.74, capped off the Justin Futures, which featured Barr at the top of the podium three times.

Earlier in the meet, Barr took home wins in the men’s 100 breaststroke (1:01.70, just over a second off of his lifetime best of 1:00.63) and boys’ 100 backstroke (55.87, .07 off of his top time).

In the women’s 200 back, Hayden Gibson wound up taking a massive victory by almost seven seconds, touching in a 2:13.54, just slower than her best she set at Sectionals earlier this month.

Antonia Leese won her second event of the week, winning the women’s 50 breast on day 4, touching in 32.53, smashing her previous best of 33.85. Completing her sprint breaststroke sweep with the girls’ 100 breast win (1:12.53) from day 1.

Lukas Vetkoetter commandingly took the boys’ 800 free in 8:16.53, separating himself from the field by nearly nine seconds.

Other Event Winners and Notable Results:

  • University of Arizona’s Malia Rausch won the women’s 200 IM in 2:20.43, setting a new top time this season for the 22-year-old.
    • 15-year-old Julia Cavalcanti finished 3rd, just over a second and a half behind Rausch for a new lifetime mark of 2:21.94
  • Texas A&M’s Kailey Kennedy took the girls’ 50 free (26.49) by 11-hundredths of a second, just off of her all-time best of 26.23.
  • Peter Horton, who swims at TCU, nabbed the men’s 50 free win in 23.27, just .09 seconds off of his best time set two weeks ago in Austin.
  • Nate Thomas took home the men’s 200 back title after finishing sub 2:04, with his finals time coming in at 2:03.59.
  • The men’s 50 breast was owned by Travis Gulledge, finishing in 28.08. The Texas A&M Aggie missed his personal mark by just over a half second (27.44)
  • Lakeside Aquatics came out victorious in the women’s 400 medley relay. Brooke Johnson plowed home in 57.89 to propel Lakeside to the win
  • Texas Ford Aquatics (3:52.09) took the nailbiter win over River City (3:52.17) to close out the relay races in Justin, topping River City by just .08 seconds.
