LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty wrapped up its regular-season swimming & diving schedule, topping both Campbell and UNC Asheville in a two-day meet, which wrapped up on Saturday at Liberty Natatorium.

The Lady Flames (7-3) defeated UNC Asheville (4-3) by a 192-161 score, while Liberty beat Campbell (1-6), 289-58. The Bulldogs topped the Camels 284-63 in head-to-head action.

Notable

  • For the meet, Liberty won three out of four relays, while the Lady Flames won all three diving events and seven individual swimming events. UNC Asheville won one relay and six individual races.
  • For the second meet in a row, Liberty’s Kamryn Cannings won four events. She added 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly victories today to her 50 free and 200 butterfly triumphs from last evening.
  • While last night’s relays were decided by a combined 0.64 seconds, Liberty won today’s two relay races by a total of 7.24 seconds.
  • Remarkably, the longest race of the meet was decided by just 0.16 seconds. Caitlin Hefner of UNC Asheville won the 1650 freestyle in 17:03.79, with Liberty’s Isabelle Gomez finishing second in 17:03.95.
  • Liberty went 1-2-3 in the 200 backstroke, with Malia Francis (2:01.71) winning, followed by Sadie Stricklin (2:05.56) and Layne Jones (2:05.68).
  • UNC Asheville picked up a 1-2-3 showing in the 200 IM.
  • Liberty took the top two spots in platform diving, with Shannon Icard (210.90) taking first and Tayler Curlee (162.95), second.

  • Liberty is 25-2 all-time against Campbell in regular-season dual meets, winning each of the last 25 meetings.
  • The Lady Flames hold a 7-2 dual-meet record over UNC Asheville, although the Bulldogs won each of the last two meetings prior to this weekend.

LYNCHBURG, Va. – UNC Asheville Women’s Swimming and Diving earned a split in its double-dual on Saturday (Feb. 1), beating Campbell 284-63 and dropping their contest with Liberty 192-161.

The day began with one-meter diving, seeing the Bulldog divers post their best collective finish ever in a dual against Liberty. Jade Canady (223.90) and Vivian Fougeron (220.50) each scored points for the Bulldogs finishing second and third in the event respectively. The 4×50 free relay saw Asheville pick up four points against Liberty and 11 points against Campbell, with Savanna BushBeatrice CocconcelliChloe McDonald and Anna Marcotti finishing in 1:46.84. The quartet of Meli PresleyMiriam WheatleyAndie Quisumbing and Taylor Smith also picked up points on Campbell with a 1:49.68 finish. Caitlin Hefner earned nine huge points against both teams with a win in the mile in 17:03.79, while Grace Adams added points finishing the mile in 17:03.95, while Kathryn Walters (17:46.65) and Rose Sciaudone (18:04.04) also picked up points against Campbell in the event. Marcotti picked up points in the 100 free in 51.62, while Cocconcelli also earned points finishing in 52.35 along with one point against Campbell from Olivia Ciancimino in 54.80. Bush earned huge points for Asheville in the 200 back in 2:09.13, while Presley (2:11.96), Tess Peny (2:13.18) and Alessia Cunegatti (2:13.34) also earned points against Campbell. Asheville picked up 13 points on Campbell in the 200 breast with Cocconcelli picking up a win in 2:22.00 and Julie Lahiff finishing just behind her in 2:22.16. Gracelyn Cox (2:24.38) and Wheatley (2:26.13) also earned points against Campbell. McDonald picked up huge points in the 100 fly in 56.23, while Smith (58.29) and Quisumbing (59.31) each also earned points against both teams in the event. Riley Edmundson paced the Bulldogs with huge points against both teams in the 200 IM in 2:07.71, while Lahiff picked up points behind her in 2:08.65 and Anna Kate Halligan also contributed finishing the event in 2:08.79. Caroline Crouse also posted a time of 2:09.97 to contribute points in the event. Kindal Culpepper (141.60), Canady (134.10) and Amelia Ward (131.75) each picked up points in the platform diving event. The quartet of Quisumbing, Hefner, Cocconcelli and Marcotti picked up points on both teams in the 4×100 free relay in 3:31.69, while Sciaudone, Bush, Adams and Ciancimino earned points against Campbell in 3:38.38.

“I’m extremely proud of how we competed this weekend,” said head coach Elizabeth Lykins. “It was a great tune-up for ASUN Championships in only 18 days!”

The Bulldogs (4-3) return to the water Feb. 19-22 for the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships. The championships will take place at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee.

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Campbell turned in five top-five finishes, closing out its regular season schedule against Liberty and UNC Asheville on Saturday at the Liberty Natatorium.

Arabella Butera tallied a third place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:23.90. The performance followed her fourth place showing in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.18. Katarina Gagnon also recorded a pair of top-five finishes, including fourth in the 500 free with a time of 5:07.70 and fifth in the 200 back with a 2:09.53, just in front of teammate Skyler Roerig’s 2:09.80.

Julia Garcia also placed fifth in the 200 fly with a 2:11.78 mark.

In the team standings, Campbell (1-6) fell to the Flames (7-3) by a 289-58 score, and UNC Asheville (4-3) defeated the Camels 284-63. Liberty also topped the Bulldogs 192-161.

The Camels will now turn their attention to the Coastal Athletic Association Championships, which begin on February 26 in Hampton, Va.
