How It Happened
A Rhode Island surge in the second half of the meet led the Rams to a 150-110 win at Central Connecticut State in the regular-season finale Saturday.
Central Connecticut State won five of the first six events and held a 63-49 lead after the 50-yard Freestyle. From there, Rhode Island went on a surge, winning five straight events.
The URI divers got things started with a 1-2-3 sweep in the 3-meter dive. Olivia Winslow won the event with a score of 273.53, followed by Anna Petke (267.38) and Lily Hsu (253.50).
That was the first of back-to-back 1-2-3 sweeps for Rhody. Ella Hacker (58.04) won the 100-yard Butterfly and was followed to the wall by teammates Julianna Tyler (58.40) and Logan Norrid (1:00.57).
Avery Potyrala won the 100-yard Freestyle with a time of 54.65 seconds, and Rylee Kelly followed with a win in the 500-yard Freestyle (5:07.21).
The run continued with the 200-yard Freestyle Relay team of Julia Havice, Abby Zadorozny, Kelly and Potyrala. The quartet won an absolute thriller, touching the wall in 1:39.19, just .01 ahead of CCSU.
During the five-event stretch, Rhody outscored CCSU 64-20, moving the Rams ahead, 113-83.
Despite a Central Connecticut State win in the 100-yard Backstroke, Rhody’s Jackie Triglia, Lily Mair and Lauren Biglow finished 2-3-4, respectively. This meant CCSU made up just one point and URI led by 29 with two events to go.
A 1-2 finish for Rhode Island by Hannah Benavides (1:05.53) and Gracie Maughan (1:06.60) helped URI score 15 points in the 100-yard Breaststroke and clinch the team win.
