NORTON, Mass. – MIT’s men’s swimming and diving team raced well on the second day of the non-scoring Wheaton Invitational on Saturday, ending the weekend with multiple wins. Junior Ben Bauchwitz (Hershey, Pa.) led the Cardinal and Gray with three individual wins throughout the day. This meet, which was against Wheaton College, Clark University and WPI, was the last meet that the Engineers will race in until the NEWMAC Championships at the end of this month.
Tech’s 200-yard medley relay started the day off on the right note with a win, touching with a time of 1:39.32. The relay, which was made up of sophomores Brad Jokubaitis (Newtown, Pa.), Ory Tasman (Orlando, Fla.), Luke Schlueter (St. Louis, Mo.) and Thomas Norris (Cincinnati, Ohio), touched over three seconds ahead of the competition.
Junior Brendon Chiu (Monterey Park, Calif.) was the lone MIT representative in the 400-yard Individual Medley, touching first by 12 seconds with a time of 4:25.13. In the 100-yard butterfly, Bauchwitz led the way with his time of 51.72 and was followed by sophomores Daryl Neubieser (Saratoga, Calif.) andEvan Olin (Ossining, N.Y.) in second and third place with times of 52.82 and 55.22. Bauchwitz later went on to take first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:08.11, while Schlueter was second in 2:19.21.
Another event that the Cardinal and Gray took first through third in was the 200-yard freestyle, with sophomore Alex Lednev(Glenmont, N.Y.) coming in first with a 1:44.88, Schlueter in second in 1:46.08 and Norris in third place in 1:46.15. Lednev’s second win of the day came in the 100-yard freestyle with a 47.92. In the 200-yard butterfly, senior Remy Mock (Victoria, British Columbia) touched first with his 1:57.21 and sophomore Sean Corcoran (Huntersville, N.C.) came in second in 1:58.07.
Bauchwitz added another win, this time in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a time of 58.91 and was the only swimmer in the event to go under a minute. He left a gap of over four seconds between him and the rest of the competition. In the 1650-yard freestyle, Neubieser won with his time of 17:30.97, while junior Austin Fathman (Hamilton, Mich.) touched in second place in 18:02.29.
On the 3-meter diving board, senior Danil Tyulmankov (Stamford, Conn.) was first with a score of 270.60 and freshman Harry Lubowe (Laguna Hills, Calif.) came in second with a 259.15. To end the day, MIT’s 400-yard freestyle A relay touched in first place with a time of 3:11.90, while the C relay came second in 3:14.08.
It will only be a matter of days until MIT faces these same rivals again, this time at the NEWMAC Championships, which will take place at WPI from Thursday through Sunday, Feb. 20-23.
