Rex Maurer Explains Swimming Extra 50 in 500 Free Win, Bob Bowman Winter Training Sets

2025 Eddie Reese Showdown

American record-holder in the 500 Free Rex Maurer took the win in his signature event this morning at the 2025 Eddie Reese Showdown… and then some. Maurer flipped at the 500 mark in 4:12.8, but unsure if he still had an additional lap to swim or not, he kept swimming for another 50 yds. He still handily won the race (with the time he registered with his flip turn at the 500 mark) by over 1 second.

Maurer then goes on to discuss winter training in Austin and shares 2 sets that stood out to the sophomore during the hard training block.

Brooke Forde vibes (remember the extra 50 at the end of Stanford’s 800 free relay?)

Don’t you get a lap counter and a bell in the 500?

I believe you were referencing the 2017 1650, when swum it was generally acknowledged as one of the best NCAA swim races ever.

Clark Smith won at 14:22.41 for a new NCAA/American record. The fastest previously had been Conor Jaeger at 14:23.52. 2nd, 3rd and 4th in the race became 2nd, 3rd and 4th all-time.

Clark Smith Texas 14:22.41
Felix Auboeck Michigan 14:22.88
Akaram Mahmoud South Carolina 14:22.99
Jordan Wilimovsky Northwestern(?) 14:23.45

Sam Kendricks called that race and ESPN just picked up the feed in the middle of the race while Rowdy took a break. When it was over, you could hear Sam say it was the greatest race he’s ever called.

The 2017 race was probably the best race I’ve witnessed in person. If I recall correctly, most of the crowd was standing the last few laps.

However, NoFastTwitch may have been referring to Chris Swanson’s also-epic come-from-behind victory in 2016. https://swimswam.com/chris-swanson-becomes-first-ever-penn-mens-ncaa-swimming-champion/

Bad 1650s are the worst race in a meet. Really good 1650s are often the best. Great 400 IMs are also fun. While it’s fun and exciting to watch an all out 100 free, especially if there is a record of any kind, the story you get from watching a really good 1650 can be fascinating. You have two or three swimmers pacing each other, making a move, falling behind and then leading again, then the swimmer who was third or fourth but constantly 10 yards back starts out splitting everyone by a half second with 400 yards to go. I’ve sat through hundreds of bad heats of 1650. Literally been bored out of my mind, A great 1650 is… Read more »
