NAU Rolls To Back-To Back Wins Over Utah Tech

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Dec. 6, 2024) – The Northern Arizona women’s swim team defeated the Utah Tech Trailblazers in a decisive 58-47 victory.

The meet opened with the 400-yard medley relay, where Northern Arizona dominated, claiming the top three spots. The winning A team, consisting of Gracie MunkCydnie PerkinsElsa Musselman, and Bena Koehn, finished with an impressive time of 3:45.51.

In the 200-yard butterfly, four Lumberjacks showcased their strength, finishing first through fourth. Freshman Isahbel Krasht secured first place with a time of 2:04.19, closely followed by Kaci Kelaher at 2:04.51.

Jamie Dellwardt claimed victory in the 200-yard backstroke, recording a time of 2:01.03.

Perkins added to the ‘Jacks success with a win in the 200-yard breaststroke, posting a time of 2:18.00.

Krasht continued her strong performance, recording the fastest time for the Lumberjacks in the 100-yard IM at 59.00.

The meet concluded with the 200-yard freestyle relay, where the Northern Arizona A team – featuring Musselman, Kokona Watanabe, Kelaher, and Koehn – finished first with a time of 1:34.00.

“We’re super excited about the results that we’re seeing tonight,” head swimming coach Andy Johns said. “We’re matching some of our times from the Idaho meet and in Colorado, so to come out after a little break, we’re super happy with the results. We are looking forward to seeing how we carry over tomorrow, how we come back and continue this energy and excitement that we have going on right now, that’s going to be big.”

The diving team also impressed with an exhibition, showcasing their skills across all boards and platforms.

The Lumberjacks will return to the pool tomorrow for another meet against Utah Tech, beginning at 11:00 a.m. Mountain Standard Time.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (Dec. 7, 2024) – The Northern Arizona women’s swimming team faced the Utah Tech Trailblazers in the second part of a dual meet after the Lumberjacks secured a 58-47 win yesterday at the Wall Aquatic Center. NAU had another successful day in the pool, earning a 143-103 victory over UT today.

“I am very proud of the effort today, as it was a tough turnaround from last night,” head swimming coach Andy Johns said. “I think they felt that, but they raced hard, showed toughness, and I’m really happy with the overall results. Now it’s time for exams, so they’ve got to shift gears a bit. It has been a great way to end this semester, and I’m happy that Utah Tech was here. We look forward to seeing them at their place in January.”

The meet began with the 200-yard medley relay, where the Lumberjacks’ A team – comprising Gracie MunkTrelise DanceElsa Musselman, and Bena Koehn – finished first with a time of 1:45.62.

Helena Robla was the fastest Lumberjack in the 200-yard freestyle, posting a time of 1:56.20, followed closely by Kylie Ney with a time of 1:57.30.

Munk secured first place in the 50-yard backstroke with a time of 26.46. She also won the 50-yard butterfly with a time of 26.13. Additionally, Munk was the fastest Lumberjack in the 200-yard IM, recording a time of 2:11.71.

The Lumberjacks swept the podium in the 50-yard breaststroke, with Dance leading the way at 29.72. Cydnie Perkins placed second with 29.81, and Marianna Diaz-Ponce took third at 30.85. The trio also dominated the 100-yard breaststroke, with Perkins in first at 1:04.35, Dance in second at 1:05.70, and Diaz-Ponce in third at 1:07.32.

Two freshmen, Kaci Kelaher and Isahbel Krasht, claimed the top spots in the 100-yard butterfly. Kelaher took first with a time of 57.40, followed closely by Krasht at 58.00.

Koehn was the fastest in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 24.43, just ahead of Kokona Watanabe, who posted a 24.45. Koehn also claimed first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.04.

Ney swam solo in the 1000-yard freestyle, finishing with a time of 10:43.31.

Jamie Dellwardt was the fastest Lumberjack in the 100-yard backstroke, finishing in fourth place with a time of 1:00.43.

Casey Craffey dominated the 500-yard freestyle, posting a time of 5:08.71 – almost four seconds ahead of the next closest competitor.

The meet concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay. Northern Arizona’s A team, with Meropi Eggink, Kelaher, Watanabe, and Koehn, secured first place with a final time of 3:32.66.

The divers put on another fantastic exhibition, showcasing their skills.

The Lumberjacks will next compete at Arizona State on Dec. 18 in Tempe, Arizona.

Utah Tech posted a pair of event wins and several top season marks on day one of the Trailblazers’ two-day dual meet at Northern Arizona on Friday afternoon at the NAU Wall Aquatic Center.

Grace Benson posted the team’s first race win of the meet in the 100-yard individual medley, touching the wall in an altitude-adjust time of 59.42 (#4 all-time at Utah Tech. Jordan Musselman also clocked a top-10, all-time program mark in that event with a second-place 1:00.30 (altitude adjusted; #5 all-time at Utah Tech).

Meanwhile, Cera Mallory raced to a runner-up finish in the 200 breast with a time of 2:18.55 (team season best; altitude adjusted), as did Mary Sims Cross in the 200 back with a 2:02.95 (altitude adjusted).

Utah Tech’s “A” team of Benson, Gabby HenryNatalia Zmierczak and Mandy Farnum combined to close day one with a victory in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:37.07.

Utah Tech, which trails NAU by a 58-47 count after six events, will head back to the pool for day two on Saturday at 11 a.m. (MT).

Utah Tech picked up four more event victories on the final day of the Trailblazers’ two-day dual meet at Northern Arizona on Saturday at the NAU Wall Aquatic Center.

Cera Mallory notched the Blazers’ first race win of the day in the 200-yard freestyle with an altitude-adjusted time of 1:53.77. Mallory also posted a runner-up showing later in the 500 free (5:05.87 – altitude adjusted).

Grace Benson followed that up six events later with her second win of the weekend as she beat out teammate Mary Sims Cross (58.82 – altitude adjusted) by 0.16 seconds to win the 100 back at 58.66 (altitude adjusted).

In the final individual race of the meet, the 200 IM, Allie Hayes picked up the win after she touched the wall in 2:15.38 (altitude adjusted).

Then in the final race of the day, the team of Benson, Mallory, Natalia Zmierczak and Mandy Farnum won the 400 free relay with a time of 3:34.11 (altitude adjusted).

Utah Tech will close out the 2024 calendar year with a home dual meet vs. New Mexico State at the HPC Pool on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 4 p.m. (MT).
