Marist Earns First Wins of Season With Sweep of Canisius

BUFFALO, New York- The Marist women’s swim and dive team earned its first win of the 2024-25 season in triumphant fashion, Friday afternoon. The Red Foxes defeated Canisius 170-124 in their first MAAC meet, led by Eydis Kolbeinsdottir who finished with two first-place finishes for the Red Foxes.

The Red Foxes improved to 1-1 on the 2024-25 season, and earned its first win in MAAC meets.

In some new events they really stepped up and raced well. We have a really good stretch against two top MAAC teams (Rider and Fairfield) coming up that will really test us to see who we are this early in the season.”
Electric Eydis
  • Eydis Kolbeinsdottir led the Red Foxes women’s team with two first-place finishes in the MAAC win against the Golden Griffins.
  • Kolbeinsdottir swam her way to a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, which tallied nine points for the Red Foxes. Kolbeinsdottir finished the 13th event of the match with a time 24.69.
  • Kolbeinsdottir also finished first in the second freestyle swim of the meet, the 100-yard freestyle. Kolbeinsdottir finished with a time of 52.92 enroute to her second win of the meet.
Notable Finishes: Swim
  • Maddie Healey dominated the 1000-yard freestyle, earning a first-place finish in the process. Healey finished the swim with a time of 10:56.88, finishing in front of teammate Bridget Rynkiewicz as she finished with a time of 11:05.29.
  • Charlotte Lepis swam her way to a podium finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Lepis finished second in the swim with a time of 1:56.99, a .01 behind the first-place finish.
  • Rae Dodson earned her second-straight win in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing over two seconds in front of the second-place finisher. Dodson swam to a first-place finish with a time of 1:05.27.
    • Dodson also finished in first for a second-straight time on the 200-yard breaststroke. Dodson swam to first place with a time of 2:23.62.
  • Lizzie Rebich earned her first win as a Red Fox in the 200-yard butterfly. Rebich finished in first-place with a time of 2:11.50, in front of her teammate who finished second, Melanie Nunn, with a time of 2:12.23.
  • Anna Hoskovec earned her first Red Foxes first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:14.53.
  • Emme Metzmaker also recorded her first Red Foxes win with a first-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 59.28.
Notable Finishes: Dive
  • The Red Foxes swept the podium in the one-meter dive in the win against Canisius.
    • Morgan Cassidy dove to first-place with a score of 190.13.
    • Kyra Cavicchi placed second in the one-meter dive with a score of 183.98.
    • Caitlyn Degise rounded-out the one-meter dive with a score of 176.18.
  • The Red Foxes also swept the podium in the three-meter dive, earning two sweeps.
    • Cavicchi placed first in the meet with a score of 190.43 in the meet.
    • Cassidy followed with a second-place finish, scoring 183.45.
    • Degise earned her second third-place finish of the meet with a score of 167.70.

BUFFALO, New York- The Marist men’s swim and dive team triumphed to its first win of the early 2024-25 season, Friday afternoon. The Red Foxes defeated MAAC foe Canisius 154-117, which earned the men their first win and MAAC win of the season.

The Red Foxes improved to 1-0 overall on the 2024-25 season, and 1-0 in MAAC meets.

Jolly James
  • James Conable led the way for the Red Foxes with three first-place finishes in their win against Canisius.
  • Conable dominated in the sixth event of the meet, the 200-yard freestyle. Conable placed first in the swim with a time of 1:42.44, which was almost two seconds in front of the second-place finishers (1:44.12).
  • Conable also finished in first in the 20th event of the meet, which was the 200-yard backstroke. Conable swam his way to first place with a time of 1:51.82.
  • Conable finished his three-first place finishes with the 200-yard IM. Conable swam his way to a third win with a time of 1:54.12.
Notable Finishes: Swim
  • Kellen Fletcher swam his way to a first-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle. Fletcher finished with a time of 1:54.82, which earned the Red Foxes nine points.
  • Adrian Bankowski tallied his first win of the season in the 50-yard freestyle. Bankowski’s first-place finish timed in at 21.30.
  • Bankowski double-downed with a second first-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle. Bankowski swam to a time of 46.65, which earned him two wins in the freestyle swims.
  • Sophomores Oscar Bjering and Adam Zaremba placed first and second in the 500-yard freestyle. Bjering finished first with a time of 4:50.03 and Zaremba recorded a second-place finish with a time of 4:53.79.

Freshman Daphne Mead took home first place finishes in all four of her races Friday as Canisius fell to Marist in collegiate swimming and diving action at the Burt Flickinger Center in downtown Buffalo.

On the women’s side, Marist defeated the Golden Griffins by a score of 170-124, while the men’s team suffered a 154-117 setback to the Red Foxes.

Mead was the standout among the women’s team, taking first place in the 100 yard backstroke (58.74), 200 backstroke (2:08.23) and 200 IM (2:08.23). The rookie also swam the first leg of the 200 yard medley relay, finishing first along with sophomores Evie LeightonCassandra Ercoli and junior Hannah Brainard (1:48.19).

Leighton had her share of success in the individual races, placing first in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:55.99. Leighton is the reigning MAAC champion in this event.

Canisius record holder, senior Sam Vidalcontinued to show his prowess in the 200 yard breaststroke, taking the top spot with a time of 2:07.74.

Sophomore Elliot Somers started his 2024-25 season with successful showings in the men’s backstroke events. He took second place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:52.49 and won the 100 back with a time of 51.10.

Other notable times came from seniors Toby Mayfield (50.85) and Bronson Benes (50.93) who placed first and second, respectively in the 100 yard butterfly. Senior Jeremy Cox took home first prize in the 100 breaststroke with a time 58.57.

The Griffs will return to the pool Oct. 19, when the Blue and Gold plays host Bowling Green, Rochester and Siena at the Flickinger Center. Action is set to start at 11 a.m.
