BOSTON – The Boston University swimming & diving teams hosted Dartmouth in a preseason scrimmage on Friday evening at FitRec Competition Pool.
The meet featured skins competitions in the 50-yard freestyle, breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke events. Senior Fia McCarty reached the final of the 50 breast and edged Dartmouth’s Maddie Blackwell by .05 in a time of 31.91 to earn the win.
The Terriers swept the 300-yard freestyle events with Izzy Valantiejus taking the women’s event in 3:00.71 and freshman Giovanni Sullo winning the men’s in 2:39.77
Sophomore Izzy Ramos took first in the women’s 300-yard individual medley with a time of 3:24.42.
In diving, senior Sophia Souza won the women’s 1-meter event with a score of 278.40 while sophomore Zein Mahana was runner-up in the men’s 3-meter at 293.48. Each of them also had a third-place finish with Souza posting a 257.70 in the 3-meter and Mahana recording a 254.63 in the 1-meter.
The meet kicked off with 400-yard medley relays where each swimmer performed a 100-yard IM. On the women’s side, BU’s top group was runner-up as Ramos, junior Haley Newman, senior Sasha Ramey and freshman Abby Han turned in a time of 4:03.79. The men’s relay of sophomore Evan Liu, freshman Abraham Lee, junior Tony Ponomarev and freshman Charlie Nenchev was runner-up in 3:32.54.
The freshman duo of Aliza Monaldo and Katie Pestrichelli was second in the women’s 2×500 freestyle relay at 10:28.90 and the men’s race saw another freshman pair finish runner-up with Sullo and Charles Schreiner posting a time of 9:39.64.
In the skins events, Ponomarev (50 back) and Ramey (50 fly,) each reached their respective finals. Ramey’s best time came in the semifinals (27.11) while Ponomarev posted a 25.20 in his final.
BU’s top performers in other skins events were senior Summer Brainin (50 free, 26.27), Lee (50 free, 22.19), senior Jed Tan (50 fly, 23.33), senior Ava Keane (50 back, 29.30) and sophomore Ethan Huynh (50 breast, 27.17).
Liu was the Terriers’ best finisher in the 300 IM, taking fourth in a time of 3:06.57. In the 100 freestyle, BU had runner-up efforts from junior Stella Langenbach (52.73) and Nenchev (46.78).
The meet closed with a 500 freestyle distance medley relay (50-100-150-200). BU took second in both races with the women posting a 4:40.87 from a team of Branin, Langenbach, Ramey and Newman. The men’s relay of Lee, freshman Andrew Ignatescu, Nenchev and Liu recorded a time of 4:08.12.
The Terriers will open their dual and Patriot League schedules on Saturday (Oct. 12) when they host Holy Cross at 1:30 p.m.
