The King Aquatic Club tore up the Washington state record book in its home pool over the weekend, winning 9 of the 10 relays at the state championships and setting state records in 8 of them while getting multiple state records in individual races as well.
18-year-old Hannah Weiss was the big individual winner for KING, sweeping all three backstroke races and setting Washington records in all three. She was 24.86 in the 50, 52.74 in the 100 and 1:54.61 in the 200 to blow away the field. KING breaststroker Carolyn McCann went 1:01.32 in the 100 breast and 2:15.03 in the 200 to set records while winning both races. The final KING record-setter in an individual race was Morgan Ginnis, who went 22.99 to win the 50 free.
Heidi VanderWel won the 50 and 100 butterflys for KING, while Alyssa Cook took the 200 and 400 IMs. The KING women swept all five relays, setting state records in all but the 800 free relay. Both the 200 and 400 medleys were made up of Weiss, McCann, VanderWel and Ginnis – each of the four will swim at a different Division I school next year. Weiss committed to USC, McCann to Michigan, VanderWel to Yale and Ginnis to New Mexico. The 200 medley went 1:40.16 while the 400 was 3:41.57. The record-setting 200 free relay (1:32.76) was made up of Kenna Ramey, Ginnis, McCann and VanderWel, while the 400 free relay (3:26.50) was comprised of Ramey, Ginnis, VanderWel and Ashley Sutherland.
15-year-old Cameron Smith of Cascade Swim Club was a triple winner herself, taking the 500 (4:55.46), 1000 (10:09.34) and 1650 frees (17:12.39).
Cascade also had success on the men’s side, with Abraham DeVine winning five races and setting four new state records. DeVine went 4:26.85 to win the 500 free, 1:47.83 in the 200 fly, 1:49.20 in the 200 IM and 3:51.82 in the 400 IM, all new state records. He also won the 1650 free.
A trio of KING boys knocked out state records as well. Thomas Anderson won the 50 back (22.34) and 50 fly (21.80), setting records in both. Mathias Oh did the same in the 100 fly (47.47), and teammate Keith Schendel set a state record in the 200 breast as well, going 2:01.09 for the win.
Harvard commit Ed Kim won two races for Bellevue, setting a state record with a 20.35 in the 50 and also winning the 100 free. Bellevue also got state records from Morgan Ciliv (50 breast, 26.32) and Brandon Nguyen (100 breast, 56.16). Todd McCarthy, who will swim for Wisconsin next season, added two more wins for Bellevue in the 100 and 200 backs.
The King Aquatic Club won every relay but the 800 free relay, setting state records in all of them. The 200 and 400 medley relays of Thomas Anderson, Keith Schendel, Mathias Oh and Tommy Thach both set records, going 1:30.50 and 3:18.29, respectively. The record-setting 200 free relay (1:22.57) was made up of Oh, Anderson, Thach and Dale Williams, while the 400 free relay of Oh, Anderson, Thach and Koppi Kolyvek went 3:03.02.
Bellevue won the 800 free relay to prevent the KING relay sweep, with the team of Todd McCarthy, Ed Kim, Stephen Boden and Brandon Nguyen setting a state record in 6:43.21.
