2024 Queensland Short Course Championships Kick Off From Brisbane

On the heels of swimming at the 2024 Olympic Games, the 2024 Queensland Short Course Championships kicked off at Brisbane Aquatic Centre.

Day one consisted of the men’s and women’s 800m freestyle events, with Riley Meares taking the former and Rylee Smith winning the latter.

15-year-old Meares put up a time of 8:16.21 to top the podium, comfortably beating runner-up Lachlan Evans of Churchie (8:23.85) and Hayden Cahill of Yeronga Park (8:29.36).

As for Smith, the 15-year-old SC Grammar swimmer posted 8:57.82 as the sole competition to dip under the 9:00 barrier.

Rackley’s Holly Fleming hit 9:07.92 for silver while Grace’s Alia Shaw logged 9:10.85 for 3rd place.

Looking ahead to the remainder of the competition, the following key athletes are expected to race:

I think you will find there were a few sub 8 minute swims from the Men, the winner reported in above article was the winner of his 15 yrs she group and not the Open Mens winner.
