Australia has led the medal table since day 3 of the meet and continues to stand at the top on day 7. Cam McEvoy won gold in the men’s 50 free while Kaylee McKeown won the women’s 200 backstroke. McKeown notably defended her title and became the first woman to win both backstroke events in back to back Olympic Games.
The US sits behind Australia with 4 gold medals and 21 total. The US only came away with one medal tonight as Regan Smith won silver in the women’s 200 back. The US will look for a medal haul in the 200 IM tomorrow where Alex Walsh is the top seed and Kate Douglass is the #3 seed. The US men are still in search of individual Olympic gold.
France also has four gold medals, all from Leon Marchand as he won the 200 IM tonight in the 2nd fastest performance all-time touching in a 1:54.06. That was his final individual event of the meet.
Canada sits at 4th on the medal table as Summer McIntosh has won the 400 IM and 200 fly. She has another chance for gold tomorrow in the women’s 200 IM where she is the #2 seed.

Since 1960, the lowest gold medal tally at the Summer Olympics for USA Swimming is 8 gold medals/31 events contested at the Seoul 1988 Olympics. As a footnote, the W 4 x 200 FR-R was not contested until 1996.
Are the US swimmers achieving season best times & just getting outmatched at Olympics, or are they underperforming with personal times? Coaching problems?

You have to think there’s only one more chance for an Australian gold: Kaylee’s 2 IM. That leaves the US in a 4 gold deficit. It might all come down to Bobby Finke.
It would be an upset, but it’s not impossible that they win the women’s 50 free. Jack hasn’t been great so far, but IIRC Harris was very good on the relay day 1
