The 2024 European Para Swimming Championships are underway in Madeira, Portugal. While this is the European Championship, there are athletes from all over the world competing, including South Africa, the US, and Australia, to name a few countries.
Through the first 4 days of the 7 day meet, there were 6 World Records broken. Germany’s Taliso Engel won the men’s 100 breast SB13 final with a time of 1:02.69. While he won gold in the race in finals, Engel was faster in prelims, where he set a new World Record in the event with a 1:02.22. Of course, that mark also sets a new European Record in the event as well. Of note, South Africa’s Nathan Hendricks set a new African Record in the prelims with a 1:11.37, though, he didn’t end up qualifying for the final.
Neutral athlete Daria Lupianenko won gold in the women’s 100 breast SB11, swimming a 1:17.65. That performance blew away the previous World Record of 1:19.78, which was set back at the Tokyo Paralympics 3 years ago.
Italian Carlotta Gilla won gold in the women’s 100 free S13, touching as the only woman under 1:00 with a 59.95. Coming in 6th was South Africa’s Danika Vyncke, who set a new African Record with a 1:06.25.
In a stunning performance, Dutch swimmer Rogier Dorsman won gold in the men’s 200 IM SM11, touching in 2:18.01. With that swim, he clipped the World Record of 2:18.16, which was set last summer. Coincidentally, the owner of that previous WR, Ukraine’s Danylo Chufarov, was in the race on Wednesday night, taking silver in 2:22.29.
The women’s 200 IM SM11 also saw the World Record go down. Neutral athlete Daria Lupianenko would break her 2nd WR of the meet, swimming a 2:38.47 for gold. She took quite a bit off the previous WR of 2:40.10, bringing the record under 2:40 for the first time.
Ukraine’s Andrii Trusov set a World Record in the men’s 100 back S7, finishing in 1:07.60.
The men’s 200 IM SM7 final saw South African Christian Sadie earn the silver medal with a final time of 2:35.33, which marks a new African Record in the event. It was Trusov who won the event, clocking a 2:32.23.
In the men’s 100 back S6, Aleksei Ganiuk broke the European Record, swimming a 1:13.47. Another European Record fell in the women’s 50 free S9, where Netherlands’ Florianne Bultje swam a 28.72.
There was an American Record broken through the first 4 days as well. Anastasia Pagonis clocked a 30.63 in the women’s 50 free S11, breaking the AR in the event.
