After an eventful first day, the 2024 Northwest Spring Speedo Sectionals meet in Federal Way kept rolling on Friday, seeing lots more fast swimming. The Friday finals session kicked off with Denver Hilltoppers 17-year-0ld Charlotte Wilson, a Virginia recruit, winning the women’s 100 back in 1:02.28. It was a solid swim for Wilson, coming in about half a second off her career best of 1:01.79, which she swam at the Knoxville Pro Swim Series back in January.
Seattle Metropolitan Aquatic Club 18-year-old Ben Bricca had a huge swim to win the men’s 100 back, clocking a 55.25 to win the race by well over a second. Bricca took about a quarter of a second off his career best with the performance. His previous PB of 55.59 was set at the Summer Junior Nationals meet last August.
After a fantastic 100 free on the first day of the meet, Pikes Peak Athletics 16-year-old Madi Mintenko ripped a 1:58.64 to win the women’s 200 free by a huge margin. Touching as the only swimmer in the field under 2:03, Mintenko’s 1:58.64 was just off her career best of 1:58.07, which she swam at Junior Nationals last summer as well.
The men’s 200 free saw King Aquatic Club 16-year-old Aiden Hammer pop a 1:52.15 to win the race. Hammer took more than a second off his previous best of 1:53.58 with the swim. He swam a very consistent race, splitting 26.83, 28.19, 28.83, and 28.30 respectively by 50.
Bellevue Club 16-year-old Alexa McDevitt took the women’s 400 IM in 4:51.35. She’s been as fast as 4:48.24 in her career, a time which she swam at Junior Nationals last summer. She was out in 1:05.93 on the fly last night, then split 1:17.76 on back. Her 2nd half of the race was very good, where she put up a 1:23.05 on breaststroke and came home in 1:04.61 on free.
Spokane Waves Aquatic Team 18-year-old Michael Hochwalt won the men’s 400 IM decisively, swimming a 4:19.70. The swim marks a huge personal best for Hochwalt, blowing away his previous top mark of 4:23.88, which he swam a Sectionals meet last July. He was great all around last night, splitting 57.11 on fly, 1:05.85 on back, 1:15.70 on breast, and 1:01.04 on free. Hochwalt is set to begin his collegiate career at Arizona State in the fall.
