SANTA BARBARA, Calif: In a thrilling day of competition, the Gauchos triumphed over the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners. Despite challenges posed by heavy rainfall that disrupted the meet, resulting in a power outage and a revised race lineup, the Gauchos showcased their prowess. The women secured a decisive victory with a final score of Santa Barbara, 118 Cal State Bakersfield 70, while the men dominated with a final score of Santa Barbara, 136 Cal State Bakersfield 52. The combined final score stood at an impressive 254-122.
Due to the adverse weather conditions, only 10 events occurred during the afternoon, and no individual final times were recorded. Nevertheless, the Gauchos’ dedication and superior skill were evident, leading to multiple swimmers clinching first-place titles.
The Gaucho women started on a strong start securing 14 points in the 200 medley relay and 13 points in the 200 freestyle. Another 14 points in the 100 backstroke put the Gauchos ahead by 26 points. They added 14 points in the 50 free before adding a meet-high 16 points in the 200 IM to secure the victory over Cal State Bakersfield.
The men were dominant from start to finish as they scored in single digits in just one event. Their top events included the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle where they earned 16 points in both events. They also managed 15 points at the start of the meet during the 200-medley relay. The Gauchos scored 13 or 14 points in six of the other seven events to walk away with a convincing 254-122 victory.
Looking ahead, the Santa Barbara swim teams will dive back into action on Jan. 13 to face off against California Baptist University. Stay tuned for more information as the event approaches.
