LA JOLLA, Calif. – UC San Diego swim teams swept their home opener taking down Cal State Bakersfield and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday afternoon at Canyonview Aquatic Center. Both squads won 11 of the 14 total events.
The Triton men defeated CMS 192 to 102 and Cal State Bakersfield 182 to 111. The Triton women defeated CMS 192 to 102 and Cal State Bakersfield 179 to 115.
ON THE MEN’S SIDE
The Triton men took first and second in the 200 medley relay to start the Saturday afternoon meet. Andrija Petkovic, Luke Pusateri, Chad Morrison, and Zach Elian earned the top finish while Nathan Lee, Adrian Bellido, Logan Lakis, and Aidan Rikic took second.
Ryan Kirton swam a time of 1:39.84 in the 200 free to earn first place. Devin Esser and Aidan Rikic took second and third for the gold and blue. In the 100 back, Nathan Lee, Andrija Petkovic, and Robby Griswold swept the event taking first, second, and third.
It was another Triton sweep in the 100 breast with Luke Pusateri skimming over the water for a time of 55.62 followed by Adrian Bellido and Colton Milne in second and third. Freshmen duo, Logan Lakis and Zach Elian, snagged first and second place in the 50 free with times of 20.96 and 21.03, respectively.
Petkovic tallied another victory in the 100 free with a time of 44.84 with Lakis and Elian finishing in fourth and fifth. Pusateri and Milne took first and second in the 200 breast for the Tritons with times of 2:04.18 and 2:06.14. Esser earned his first win of the day in the 500 free with a time of 4:34.93. Lee took another win in the 200 IM with Jake Reuter finishing in second behind him.
Finishing the day how they started it, Elian, Petkovic, Lakis, and Kirton took first place in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:01.53. Rikic, Lucas Brunett, Andrew Bowman, and Bellido followed behind them in second with a time of 3:06.11.
ON THE WOMEN’S SIDE
Starting the meet with a win, the Triton women won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:42.37. The relay was made up of Eva Boehlke, Chloe Braun, Miranda Renner, and Josette Odgers. In second place, Teagan Monroe, Jana Jocic, Sandy Li, and Mackenzie Lee swam a time of 1:45.93 to beat out CMS and earn the Tritons an additional four points.
In the 1000 free, Juli Arzave and Sophia Bell led the gold and blue to a first and second place finish. The senior posted a time of 10:08.36 while Bell finished with a time of 10:22.32. Swimming a time of 1:53.24, Eva Boehlke took first in the 200 free with Sophie Francis finishing milliseconds behind her for second.
Teagan Monroe and Iris Bayan took first and second in the 100 back with times of 57.04 and 57.37 respectively. Chloe Braun held her lead through the split to take first place in the 100 breast with a time of 1:03.13. Swimming a time of 23.90, Mackenzie Lee took first place in the 50 free with Josette Odgers coming behind her for second with a time of 24.36.
In the 200 fly, Minh-Nha Kawamura swam a tight race with CSUB to take second place by 0.5 seconds. Lee and Odgers took one and two again in the 100 free posting a time of 52.99 and 53.19. Bianca Fernandez took fourth with a time of 53.67. In the 200 back, Iris Bayan swam a time of 2:03.39 to take first place with Monroe and Sandy Li sweeping second and third.
Boehlke tallied another win on the day in the 200 breast with a time of 2:17.11. After already swimming the 1000 free, Bell swam the 500 free to take the event with a time of 5:01.92. Bookending the meet, Fernandez, Francis, Li, and Miranda Renner finished first in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:31.66. They were followed by Odgers, Bayan, Katy Hawk, and Lee for second place with a time of 3:33.10.

The Triton women return next week to host UC Davis in a dual meet at Canyonview Aquatic Center with a 12 p.m. start. The Triton men will return to competition Nov. 4 against UC Santa Barbara at Pepperdine.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – In a split-result weekend against UC San Diego and Claremont-Mudd-Scrips, the Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams had a few standout performers. For the third week in a row, Vili Sivec showcased his olympic-hopeful talent, winning both the 100 and 200 Fly against UCSD (49.02 and 1:47.67) with his 200-time being the fastest to-date. Likewise, Lorena Jerebic crushed her events, also winning the 100 and 200 fly against UCSD (56.93 and 2:05.41). Thanks to the fantastic individual performances of Sivec, Jerebic, Kylie Ney, Arthur Schneider, and more, the `Runners took their first dual win of the season and will build on that effort going forward.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Mackenzie Mayfield won the 200 IM, and Meilan Uyeno (one-meter) and Alexis Romero (three-meter) earned diving wins to highlight the performance of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s swimming and diving team on Saturday in a tri-meet against Division I opponents UC San Diego and CSU Bakersfield.
UC San Diego defeated the Athenas 192-102, while CSU Bakersfield won its dual with CMS 171-128.
Mayfield won a tight race in the 200-yard IM, finishing in 2:08.40 to win by just .18 over Minh-Nha Kawamura of UC San Diego, with Gabi Icheva in third in 2:08.87.
Uyeno won the one-meter in her first collegiate competition with a score of 215.60, while Romero finished first in the three-meter with a 228.90, edging out Uyeno in second with a 217.40.
Sun Young Byun earned a pair of second-place finishes, clocking a 1:54.84 in the 200-yard freestyle to finish 1.57 seconds behind Sophie Francis of UC San Diego. She then added a runner-up in the 100 fly in 57.16, just .23 behind Lorena Jerebic of CSU Bakersfield.
Mayfield also had a third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:06.06. Annette Chang was third in the 50-free with a 24.64, with Ally Rudolph close behind in 24.76 in fourth, while Katy Shaw was third in the 500 free in 5:10.97. The CMS 400-yard freestyle relay of Byun, Shaw, Chang and Annika Sharma also came in third in 3:34.36.
CMS will be back in action in two weeks for a tri-meet with Chapman and Whittier to open SCIAC play at Axelrood Pool.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s swimming and diving team opened its 2023-24 season in a tri-meet against UC San Diego and CSU Bakersfield and performed well, falling to Bakersfield by just 16 points (158-142), while dropping a 192-102 decision to the host Tritons.
The returning All-Americans for the Stags got off to a great start, with Lucas Lang taking first in the 1000 with a time of 9:34.99. Lang also added a third-place finish in the 500 free with a 4:41.12.
Frank Applebaum, meanwhile, swam a 1:47.82 in the 200 fly in his first race of the year, not far behind his pace of NCAA Division III record pace of 1:43.96 that he set last year in repeating as national champion. He was edged by Vili Sivec of CSU Bakersfield by just .15, but showed that he is going to be hard to beat in his quest for a third straight national title. He also came in third in the 100 fly in 49.63.
Theo Johnson earned third place in the 50 free with a 21.29, while Anderson Breazeale was third in the 200 back in 1:51.44. The Stags were also third in the opening 200-yard medley relay with Breazeale, Evan Deedy, Applebaum and Johnson combining to finish in 1:33.55.
In the diving competition, CMS finished 2-5 in the one-meter, with Ethan Sattley second, Ben Smith third, Luke Vlases fourth and Bennet Matazzoni fifth. Matazzoni was also third in the three-meter.
CMS will be back in action on Nov. 4, when it takes on Chapman and Whittier in a tri-meet at Axelrood Pool.
