Ogretir Hits 100 Breast Lifetime Best of 59.18 To Close Out Turkish Trials

2023 TURKISH TEAM TRIALS

The 2023 Turkish Team Trials wrapped up from Edirne tonight with Berkay Ogretir scoring a sub-minute 100m breaststroke.

25-year-old Ogretir put up a time of 59.18 to take the men’s 100m breaststroke, producing a lifetime best in the process.

Entering this competition, Ogretir’s career-quickest rested at the 59.21 logged in the heats of the event at the 2021 European Championships.

He shaved .03 off that result to take the gold here and get under the 59.75 World Aquatics ‘A’ standard needed for this summer’s World Championships. Ogertir’s outing also cleared the Olympic Qualification Time of 59.79 needed for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

National record holder Emre Sakci partook in two separate 100m breast time trials but couldn’t break the minute barrier. Despite representing the fastest Turkish man in history with his NR of 58.85 from 2019, Sakci settled for times of 1:00.13 and 1:00.38 at this competition.

Following up on his 100m back national record set earlier in the meet, 22-year-old Mert Ali Satir established a new Turkish standard in the 50m back.

Satir touched the wall in a time of 25.31, slicing .06 off of the previous national record of 25.37 Doruk Tekin put on the books in 2021. His time, however, fell shy of the World Aquatics ‘A’ standard of 25.16 needed for Fukuoka.

So he swims the first 50m faster than his 50m race. Drops 1 second race vs time trial. Very interesting! Is there a link to watch? I love time trials in these countries.

Thanks I checked. But that’s a total disgrace. Extra butterfly kicks. He needed to be DQed. No question! What a cheat!

I am Turkish. But I think your reasoning is justified. Trust me, we don’t disagree. You have to be objective. That 1 quota would probably be someone else’s. Time trial should definitely be removed.

I’m Turkish as well and this is a big problem. Everything is corrupt. We wanted to contact FINA about this because in order to achieve cuts the timing system is changed (same glitch that happened at euros in Glasgow) which explains the 50 being faster than their individual 50s. But we don’t know where to complain or what to do

What you are saying here takes the situation to a different level! If this is more than a guess, you HAVE to take this to FINA. There are hotlines specifically for these situations.

Turkish- American does not matter. Rules do not change by nationality.

Weird that the time trial times are so much faster than the normal racing times…. Seems most Turkish swimmers get their pbs there…
