Three Swimmers Scratch Out Of 800 Freestyle On Day 1 Of PSS Westmont

2023 PRO SWIM SERIES – WESTMONT

Tonight is the opening session of the Pro Swim Series stop in Westmont, Illinois. The lone event this evening is the 800 freestyle, which saw just three scratches between both the men and women.

The women’s side remains unchanged from the latest psych sheet with no scratches. The biggest absence is Olympic champion Katie Ledecky, who was slated to swim the 800 free today. However, she announced earlier this week that she was pulling out of the competition due to illness.

Ledecky’s absence leaves Leah Smith as the top seed tonight with an 8:17.52 entry time. Erica Sullivan and Deniz Ertan take the next two seeds, entered at 8:24.02 and 8:24.94. Sullivan and Ertan both competed at the NCAA Division I Championships last month, where they earned 5th and 15th in the 1650, respectively.

The highest scratch on the men’s side is #18 seed Josh Brown, who was entered at his best time of 8:12.02 from 2021. Brown enters the meet as unattached, but swims for Notre Dame collegiately. With his scratch, Jack Callan moves into the second heat of men.

The top heat of the men’s race is the same as indicated on the psych sheet, with Olympic gold medalist Bobby Finke coming in as the top seed. Fink will battle it out with Charlie Clark from Ohio State and Yigit Aslan from Wisconsin, both of whom are coming off of their college seasons. Clark placed 7th in the 1650 at NCAAs, while Aslan took 7th in the same event at Big Tens.
