Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club Tops Team Scores At 2023 Middle Atlantic JR Champs

The 2023 Middle Atlantic SC Junior Championships wrapped up this past weekend in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. The meet featured the top 11-12 and 13-14 year-olds from the Middle Atlantic LSC. The Suburban Seahawks took home the girls’ title, beating the 2nd-place Jersey Wahoos by an 82-point margin. On the boys’ side of the meet, Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club won with 880.5 points total. Greater Philadelphia ultimately topped the combined team standings as well with 1467.5 points total.

Highlighting the boys’ side of the meet was 12-year-old Luke Bickett from Greater Philadelphia Aquatic Club. Bickett won six of the ten individual events he competed in, and was a part of the team’s record-setting 400 freestyle relay. Seven of his races also marked new club team records for 11-12 boys.

Bickett swept the breaststroke events, with times of 29.60 in the 50 breaststroke, 1:05.20 in the 100, and 2:21.98 in the 200. His 50 breast ranks him 12th in the country among 11-12 boys this year.  Bickett’s other victories came in the 100 and 200 IM, with times of 59.20 and 2:06.52, and the 50 back (26.98). His 50 breast, 200 IM, and 50 back all rank in the top-20 nationally this year among 11-12 boys, with his 50 breast being the highest at 12th. 

12-year-old Shelby Hutchinson from South Jersey Aquatic Club won seven of her ten individual events. Hutchison first secured a victory in the 200 back with an eight-second time drop to post a 2:05.24, ranking her 4th in the country this year for her age group. She finished her backstroke sweep with the wins in the 50 and 100, clocking best times of 27.66 and 57.74. Her 100 back lands her at 5th in the country so far this year.

Hutchinson also swept the fly events, posting best times of 26.40/57.97/2:12.17 in the 50/100/200. Her 100 fly also ranks top-10 this year at 8th. Rounding out Hutchinson’s victories was the 100 freestyle, where she dropped over two seconds to post a 54.91 in finals. 

13-year-old Amelia Gipson from Germantown Academy Aquatic Club won multiple events in the girl’s 13-14 age group. She secured victories in the 1650, 500, 400 IM, and 200 fly with best times in all but the 400 IM. Gipson dropped over ten seconds in the 1650 to log a 17:13.04, ranking her 5th among 13-year-old girls this year. 

For the 13-14 boys, Ryan Quinn from South Jersey Aquatic Center led the way with five individual 1st-place finishes. Quinn dropped over a second to post a 50.20 in the finals of the 100 fly, moving him to 4th in the country this year for 13-14 boys. He also dropped time in the 200 fly, clocking a PB by over a second for a 1:54.67. His other victories included the 200 IM (1:56.46), 100 back (52.04), and 200 back (1:54.10).
