Milak Wrangles Up 200 Free Victory On Night 3 Of Hungarian SC Championships

2022 HUNGARIAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The penultimate day of the 2022 Hungarian Short Course Championships wrapped up from Kaposvár with Kristof Milak making waves in another event.

The 22-year-old topped the men’s 200m freestyle race, producing a time of 1:43.54 to beat the domestic field.

Opening in 51.06 and closing in 52.48, Milak posted the only result of the pack under 1:44. The next-closest competitor was teammate Richard Marton who clocked 1:44.37 for silver. Benedek Bona rounded out the top 3 in 1:45.00.

Although Milak’s personal best checks in at the 1:42.61 he logged in October of 2021, tonight’s outing represents the 2nd fastest of his career, building on his 100m free and 200m fly victories from the first two nights of these annual championships.

On his victory, Milak stated post-race, “I would say this was a medium time, it was pretty good.”

Milak nearly made it a double gold on the evening, but Szebasztian Szabo got the upper hand in the 50m fly race. Szabo got to the wall in a winning mark of 22.05 to Milak’s 22.42, with the pair marking the only racers of the field to get under the 23-second threshold.

Szabo owns the Hungarian national record in 21.75, a time which also ties Brazilian Nicholas Santos for the World Record in the event.

Szabo was pleased with tonight’s outcome, saying after the contest, “I still feel that this is my best event, that’s what I’m best at – this is also where I have my best chance at the World Championships.”

33-year-old Zsuzsanna Jakabos proved age is just a number in the women’s 400m IM, taking the event in a time of 4:36.56.

That garnered over a second advantage ahead of runner-up Eszter Szabo-Feltothy who snagged silver in 4:38.10 while Viktoria Mihalyvari-Farkas also landed on the podium with a bronze medal-worthy result of 4:38.58.

Additional gold medalists on the night included 5-time World Junior gold medalist Nikolett Padar taking the women’s 200m free in a time of 1:54.58 while David Horvath came away with the win in the men’s 200m breast in 2:08.48.

National record holder Eszter Bekesi topped the women’s 2breast field in 2:22.15 while Lora Komoroczy was victorious in the women’s 50m fly in a mark of 26.56.

Wrapping up the night was Gabor Zombori taking the men’s 400m IM in 4:06.06, beating out both Balazs Hollo and Hubert Kos. Hollo touched in 4:06.32 while last night’s 100m IM winner Kos was well behind for bronze in 4:11.95.

The hungarian field getting stronger in 200 free, Marton had a PB, while Holló or Németh wasnt even there. The 3. placed guy improved his best time with 6 seconds today from 1:51 to 1:45. He trains with Németh. And the 5th placed guy with a time of 1:54,40 is 18 as well, how had a great final year as a youth swimmer.
While Zombori Gábor raced in 400 medley with Holló, so he also skipped 200 free.

On the women side Pádár & Minna has some massive personal best times as well. Pádár is the 4th fastest junior EUROPEAN swimmer all-time. She was amazing until 150 but closing quite slowly with a 30,11 on the last fifty, while… Read more »
