BALTIMORE – The UMBC women’s swimming and diving team captured 15 of 16 events in a meet versus America East Conference foe VMI in the Retrievers’ first home meet of the 2022-23 season.
Senior Claire Custance and juniors Roaa Farag and Makaela Hill each won a pair of events for the Retrievers. Custance triumphed in both breaststroke events, Farag captured the 200 butterfly and 500 freestyle, while Hill cruised to wins in both sprint freestyle events.
“Today was a great show of what we can do when we are firing on all cylinders,” said Head Coach Matt Donovan. “This team is flying a little under the radar, but people should keep an eye out. We are going to do good things this season. I am very excited for our next big meet in December.”
Individual winners for the Retrievers included:
- Senior Kylie Kelly – 1000 freestyle
- Senior Makayla Ludwick – 200 freestyle
- Junior Nyah Stahl – 100 backstroke
- Graduate student Caroline Sargent – 200 backstroke
- Senior Sierra Tosten – 100 butterfly
- Freshman Alicia Buteau – 3m diving
- Freshman Telma Maltesjö – 200 IM
UMBC also won the opening 200 medley relay and the closing 400 freestyle relay. They triumphed, 201-92.
The meet marked the final home appearance for senior Grace Johnson, who will be graduating in December.
The Retrievers will compete in the ECAC Winter Championships Dec. 2-4 in East Meadow, N.Y.

Graduate student Tiago Asakawa, junior Dani Nicusan, sophomore JJ Chapman and freshman Anders Logas each won a pair of events for the Retrievers.
“We got off to a rocky start this season, but I am glad to see where we are today,” said Head Coach Matt Donovan. “Some guys are coming back from injury, coupled with senior leadership and the consistency that they always bring. When we have a singular focus, I will put this team up against anyone.”
Asakawa, who is enjoying an outstanding ultimate campaign, sprinted to victory in the 50 freestyle and posted another triumph in the 200 individual medley. Nicusan and Chapman won both breaststroke and backstroke events respectively, while Logas continued his brilliant start, easily prevailing in both diving events.
UMBC triumphed, 194-92, over the Keydets.

BALTIMORE, Md. – The VMI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) Saturday, with the Retrievers taking the men’s meet 201-92 and the women’s competition 194-92. The Keydets recorded numerous noteworthy places and times throughout the day.
Men’s swimming highlights:
*Conner Jorgensen and Collin Marks swam to a 2-3 finish in the 1000 free
*Connor Doyle and Jack Sheehan finished 2-3 in the 200 freestyle
*Chase Lane placed second in the 100 breaststroke
*Dalton Cosner finished 2nd in the 100 free
*Doyle placed 3rd in the 200 backstroke
Women’s Swimming Highlights:
*Noelle Tong touched the wall for 3rd place in the 100 backstroke
*Anne Bowles placed second in the 100 breaststroke
*Tong and Kate Taylor finished 3rd and 4th in the 50 free
*Tong finished her day with another 2nd place finish in 100 free
*Bowles and Jessica Cox finished 3-4 in the 200 breaststroke
*Rachel Greathouse finished 3rd in the 100 fly
Diving Notes:
*London Yerasimides ’23 took 1st place on the 3M board with a new PR of 222.90 points
*Bridger Thurston took 2nd place on both the 1M and 3M boards
*Lane Jones placed 3rd on the 1M board with a new PR of 202.88
