Division 1 Preview
Brookfield East’s Maggie Wanezek comes in as the top seed in the 100 free (49.42) and 100 backstroke (52.65). At this meet last year, Wanezek won the 100 back in a state record time of 51.59, obliterating Beata Nelson’s 2015 record of 52.13.
Wanezek did not compete in the 100 free last year, but five of the top eight finishers from last year return in the event. Seeded second behind Wanezek is Ellery Ottem and Hailey Tierney, who were both 50.68 at their Sectional meets. Ottem placed third last year with a time of 50.97, while Tierney did not compete in it in 2021.
Arrowhead’s Campbell Stoll, who is a club teammate of Wanezek at Elmbrook Swim Club, is also seeded first in multiple events. She will look to defend her title in the 200 IM and 100 fly, where she won last year in near-state record times of 1:58.19 and 51.89. Stoll’s 200 IM at Sectionals puts her almost four seconds ahead of second seed Victoria Brostowitz, who placed second behind Stoll in the event last year.
In the 100 fly, Stoll is seeded less than a second ahead of club teammate Sophia Brueggeman, who placed tenth in the event last year as a freshman with a time of 56.60. None of the top-eight finishers besides Stoll will return to the event this year.
Brookfield East will look to defend their state titles in all the relays, but will likely face the biggest challenge in the 200 freestyle relay. They are seeded second behind Waukesha West/Catholic Memorial by just under two seconds. Waukesha West/Catholic Memorial placed 16th in the event last year.
Division 2 Preview
Edgewood returns multiple event winners from 2021, where they decisively won the Division 2 title by 206 points over runner-up Rhinelander.
Wisconsin commit Izzy Enz will look to defend her state title in the 200 free, which she won last year in a new Division 2 record time of 1:47.65. Teammate Brynn Stacey, who was runner-up in the event last year (1:48.66), is entered just 0.30 behind Enz.
Enz is also returning to the 500, which she won last year with a time of 4:55.29. This year she is seeded third behind Casey Stephens and Libby Michel, who placed 3rd and 6th, respectively, at last year’s meet.
Edgewood won all three relays in 2021. This year, they are seeded first in only the 200 freestyle relay, which they won last year in a Division 2 record of 1:34.46. Only one of the members of the record-setting relay graduated, meaning they have a good chance at another record-breaking performance this year.
Jefferson/Cambridge is narrowly seeded first above Baraboo in the 200 medley relay, while Whitefish Bay is seeded ahead of Edgewood by just 0.08 in the 400 freestyle relay.
