This week on the SwimSwam Breakdown, we discuss Regan Smith and others moving to ASU to train with Bob Bowman, the fairness of NCAA 5th years, and not “fully tapering” for 2 years. See full list of topics below:

- 0:30 Regan Smith, Chase Kalisz, and Jay Litherland announce they will be moving to Arizona State to train with Bob Bowman
- 17:26 At this point, are 5th years overpowered in the NCAA?
- 23:20 What does “not fully tapering” for 2 years mean and is it a good strategy?
- 29:20 Will Ariarne Titmus go best times again in her career? Will she defend her Olympic titles in Paris?
SINK or SWIM
- 35:20 Will David Popovici medal in the 400 free at Euros?
- 39:42 Will Willard Lamb’s 100-104 Masters record be broken in the next 100 years?
- 42:58 Will current 12-year-old Audrey Derivaux make a final at the 2024 Olympic Trials?
- 44:50 Will the 2022 Commonwealth Games have been Adam Peaty‘s and Emma McKeon‘s last?
- 48:32 Which Swimmer/Race was YOUR Sink/Swim of the 2022 Commonwealth Games?
I was surprised to hear Braden say he thought Australians would be mad at speculation around whether Emma will swim the next Comm Games. That seems completely uncontroversial haha.
However, I do disagree with the discussion around Titmus. Suggesting that she basically was only motivated to beat Ledecky seems way off. She has broken two world records plus swam the fastest ever split in a relay both 9+ months after beating Ledecky. She definitely has more pushing her than just that. It’s also strange to speculate on whether she has reached her peak when she just broke two WRs in the last 3 months. Seems a little soon.
Agree totally
Time to link to an old thread. I remembered a comment that someone made that I sensed might be very astute. Now I’m even more convinced. Katie Ledecky is an excellent handicapper:

When did Regan say she was mad that SwimSwam didn’t pick her to win gold? Was that on a podcast? I don’t remember hearing it but I’d like to listen because it sounds hilarious
Is it a dour attitude though or wanting something so much. Reminiscent of Leisel Jones early years. I’d rather people be as they are than fake. Here’s hoping she can get her gold like LJ.
Probably if Laurie Val makes a 100 she will swim faster than Willard Lamb. Granted, her record will be a women’s record. Remember she swim a 1:09 in 100 yard fly around 70 years old. This is a B time in age group swimming which means she is very very good at her age.
Where is this “supposed” sprinter announcement?
Yeah like do we know when we’re getting the announcement. I’m excitex
For some reason I have a feeling its Weitzeil but thats just me
My guess is Comerford. Moving with the rest of the UGA group.
Watch heads explode when it’s MA
How about Braden dropping the mic on the LLC . Seems he has been speaking to the soon on to be named Cal Women’s coach and his LLC
“Big crash at the end of the road” …such a cogent analysis. All of a swimming career isn’t one Trials in 2024. So many consequential meets ahead of then, at least 2 more selection meets. The road is one step at a time. Peak performance is needed for confidence. Also, nothin is forever & health, tomorrows are promised to no one.
