Women’s Recap
South Orange, N.J. – The Seton Hall women’s swimming and diving team topped UMBC on Senior Day inside Arthur E. Imperatore Natatorium. The Pirates outscored the Retrievers 169.5-119.5 in the final home meet of the season for The Hall. In total, The Hall took first in 11 of 16 events.
The Pirates came out of the gate strong going 1-2-3 in the 1000 Free. Amanda Zajdzinski (Mesa, Ariz.) took first in a time of 10:25.84, Madeleine Bachand (Raleigh, N.C.) placed second with a time of 10:39.85 and Allie Waggoner (Moorestown, N.J.) placed third in a time of 10:40.10. Both Zajdzinksi and Waggoner would reprise those finishes this time in the 200 Free with time of 1:55.93 and 1:57.69, respectively. Natalie Heim (Middletown, N.J.) would place second with a time of 1:56.36 as the Pirates would go 1-2-3 for the second consecutive event.
In the 100 Back, Madeline Field (Wheaton, Ill.) would take first, doing so in a time of 59.09. In second place for the Pirates would be Catherine Horner (Lancaster, Pa.) in a time of 59.98. Nicole Bastian (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) would place second in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:08.10.
The Hall would go one-two in the 200 Fly as Sierra Cripps (Seymour, Conn.) paced the pool in a time of 2:07.66 while Claire O’Neill (Mount Joy, Pa.) took second in 2:10.05. Cornelia Jerresand (Taeby, Sweden) was the first to touch the wall in the 5o Free in a time of 24.48 with Heim in a second-place finish in a time of 24.62.
On the boards, Laura Stavila (Oakland, Calif.) placed first in both the 1M and 3M dives with scores of 243.82 and 226.20, respectively. Nicolette Pawar (Lawrenceville, N.J.) would place second in the 1M of 217.95.
The Pirates got first and second-place finished from Leiya Istambouli (Danbury, Conn.) and Heim in the 100 Free. Istambouli paced the pool in a time of 53.28 while Heim was second with a time of 53.44. The Hall would go one-two yet again as Field led the 200 Back in a time of 2:08.70 while Horner took second in a time of 2:10.91.
Seton Hall showed dominance in the distance events with a one-two-three finish in the 500 Free with Zajdzinski in first with a time of 5:08.60, Waggoner in second in 5:13.54 and Bachand in third in 5:14.65. Field would be the first to finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.37.
The Pirates closed the day strong as the relay team of Istambouli, Lea Moeller (New Lenox, Ill.), Josie McCartney (Verona, Wisc.) and Heim combined to touch the wall first in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:35.86.
The Pirates will have travel down to Washington, D.C. to compete against BIG EAST foe Georgetown on Saturday. Meet time is set for 1 p.m.
Men’s Recap
South Orange, N.J. – The Seton Hall men’s swimming and diving team earned a big win on Senior Day over UMBC inside Arthur E. Imperatore Natatorium. The Pirates outscored the Retrievers 162-136 in the final home meet of the season for The Hall. In total, The Hall took first in 11 of 16 events.
The Pirates started fast picking up a first-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay as the team of Ross Pantano (Bennington, Neb.), Gennarino Conzemius (Bethel Park, Pa.), Gaige Ryan (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) and Thomas Minar (Oxford, Conn.) combined to touch the wall first in a time of 1:33.07.
Freshman Sean Vizzard (Mount Laurel, N.J.) picked up right where he left off in an impressive freshman campaign, this time taking first in the 1000 Free with a time of 9:30.52. On his senior day, Ben LaClair (Belchertown, Mass.) paced the pool in the 200 Free, taking first with a time of 1:40.51. Right behind LaClair was Gideon Langenbusch (Oberhausen, Germany) who placed second in a time of 1:41.92.
Pantano picked up his second, first-place finish of the afternoon, this time in the 100 Back. The junior finished in a time of 50.20. In the 100 Breaststroke, Justen Lopez (Levittown, N.Y.) led all swimmers with a time of 57.31 while Conzemius took third in a time of 58.14.
Ji Ho Lee (Charlotte, N.C.) took second in the 200 Fly with a time of 1:54.18, while Minar also picked up a second-place finish in the 50 Free with a time of 21.21.
On the boards, Joel Satir (Greenwich, Conn.) took first in the 3M with a score of 322.12 and third in the 1M with a score of 296.32. Quinn Murtha (Cumming, Ga.) took first in the 1M dive with a score of 296.32 and second in the 3M with a score of 294.67. Trevor Post (Bay City,Mich.) placed second in the 1M dive with a score of 271.05
LaClair would earn another first-place finish, this time in the 100 Free doing so in a time of 46.43 while Minar placed third in 46.95. The Hall would go one-two in the 200 Back, Pantano in first with a time of 1:51.77 with Walker Parra (Pensacola, Fla.) in second with a time of 1:56.09.
In the 500 Free, Vizzard would again lead all swimmers with a time of 4:40.32 while Langenbusch took second in a time of 4:43.13. The Hall would close out the day strong as the relay team of Langernbusch, Minar, Ryan and LaClair would swim the fastest in the 400 Free Relay with a time of 3:06.94

Women’s Recap
South Orange, N.J.- In their final dual meet of the campaign, the UMBC women’s swimming and diving squads dropped a 169.5-104.5 decision at Seton Hall on the Pirates’ Senior Day.
Junior Jenna Gwinn (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales) continued her brilliant campaign by winning both breaststroke events and swimming the breaststroke leg on the Retrievers’ winning 200 medley relay quartet. Gwinn has won seven consecutive individual races and ten overall in 2021-22.
The meet was the Retrievers’ first outside competition since Dec. 3-5 when they placed second in the ECAC Championships.
“Today was a tough meet against a great opponent,” said Head Coach Matt Donovan. “It was exciting to see the team race after a long layoff. I enjoyed watching our team put up a great fight all day long. We are positioned well moving forward and we are excited for the post season run.”
Junior Sierra Tosten (Hagerstown, Md.) picked up UMBC’s other individual gold of the meet, capturing the 100 yard butterfly. Tosten and graduate student Natalija Marin (Belgrade, Serbia) finished 1-2 in the event.
UMBC opened the proceedings by winning the 200 medley relay. The foursome of Caroline Sargent (Trumbull, Conn.), Gwinn, Tosten and Makaela Hill (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) took the event in 1:47.90.
Hill turned in a second-place effort in the 50 freestyle, while senior Mya Loniewski (Redford, Mich.) earned a silver in the 200 individual medley. Junior Alexis Bruington placed second in the 3-meter diving event with a score of 198.37.
UMBC will compete in the Navy Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 29 in their final preparation for the America East Championships.
Men’s Recap
South Orange, N.J.- In their final dual meet of the campaign, the UMBC men’s swimming and diving squads dropped a 162-136 decision at Seton Hall on the Pirates’ Senior Day.
UMBC did not earn gold in the first five events of the program, but then rallied to capture first-place finishes in five of the next eight swimming events.
The meet was the Retrievers’ first outside competition since Dec. 3-5 when they cruised to a big victory the ECAC Championships.
“Today was a tough meet against a great opponent,” said Head Coach Matt Donovan. “It was exciting to see the team race after a long layoff. I enjoyed watching our team put up a great fight all day long. We are positioned well moving forward and we are excited for the post season run.”
Sophomore Daniel Nicusan (Santana de Mures, Romania) and junior Gabe Laracuente (Gaithersburg, Md.) highlighted the prolonged four-hour meet for the Retrievers. Nicusan won the 200 breaststroke and 200 individual medley events and placed second in the 100 breaststroke. From lane seven, Laracuente captured the 50 freestyle and then came back later to win the 100 butterfly.
Senior Matthew Bennici (Walkersville, Md.) kick-started the UMBC rally, coming from off the pace in the final 50 yards to win the 200 butterfly.
Graduate student Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) and junior Niklas Weigelt (Clayton, Calif.) earned silvers in the 1000 and 100 freestyles respectively.
UMBC will compete in the Navy Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 29 in their final preparation for the America East Championships.
