Bucknell Women, Johns Hopkins Men Earn Wins In Split Dual

BALTIMORE – The Bucknell swimming & diving teams returned to competition by facing off against Johns Hopkins at Newton White Athletic Center Natatorium.

The Bison women scored a 160-89 victory to improve to 6-1 (4-1 PL) on the season. The men’s team ceded a 166-95 decision to the host Blue Jays, moving to 5-2 (4-1 PL).

On the women’s side, Alexis Faria (100 & 200 butterfly), Maddie Hartigan (100 & 1,000 freestyle) and Sabrina Vumbacco (200 & 500 freestyle) each won two races, with Hartigan adding a runner-up effort in the 50 freestyle.

Catherine Craig (200 breaststroke), Abby Doss (100 breaststroke) and Esme Hunter (200 backstroke) rounded out the women’s team’s individual victors, with Doss also finishing second in the 200 backstroke.

In addition, Vumbacco and Craig teamed with Meghan Taner and Kayla Lichtner for a first-place showing in the 200 medley relay.

Notably, the Bucknell women went 1-2-3 in both breaststroke races and in the 200 freestyle.

On the men’s side, Andy Dorsel outraced the field in the 200 IM; he added runner-up efforts in the 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly.

The 400 freestyle relay team of Liam PittChris KopacChris Fabian and John Gehrig also captured a victory.

Dating back to the 2018-19 campaign, the Bison women have posted an incredible 27-3 (20-3 PL) record in dual meets; all three of their losses came to reigning Patriot League champion Navy.

Bucknell next resumes Patriot League competition by traveling to Loyola (Md.) for a 12 p.m. dual meet on Friday, Jan. 14. The Bison then host Army West Point at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 15.

The Basics

• The Short Story: The Johns Hopkins men’s swim team returned to the Newton White Aquatic Center on Saturday and cruised to a 166-95 win over Bucknell. The Blue Jays won 12 of the 14 events to hand the Bison just their second loss of the season.

Top Finishers
• Hopkins kicked off the meet with a win in the 200 Meldey Relay. Junior Steven Rua, seniors Max Chen and Jeff Vitek and graduate student Nat Davenport grabbed the win with a time of 1:32.76.
• Sophomore Kellen Roddy then beat the field, by nearly 28 seconds, to win the 1000 Free in 9:28.80. Graduate student CJ Arena took third place in 9:56.72 and missed second by  just five-hundredths of a second.
• Senior Noah Corbitt won the 200 Free with a time of 1:40.70, while classmate Mitchell Simmons placed third in 1:43.73.
• The Blue Jays then went one-two in the 100 Back. Rua earned the win in 52.42, beating senior Dylan Wachenfeld to the wall by 0.22 seconds.
• Chen followed with a win in the 100 Breast as he clocked in at 55.69, to beat Bucknell’s Ryaan Hatoum by nearly 3.5 seconds. Sophomore Justin Limberg took third (59.15) and freshman Mitchell List placed fourth (59.67).
• Vitek then took the top spot in the 200 Fly as he touched in 1:53.43. Freshman Jonik Surprenant followed in third with a time of 1:55.75.
• Davenport continued the Blue Jays’ winning ways as he won the 50 Free with a time of 21.33. Junior Spencer Ryan finished in third place with a 22.12.
• Corbitt picked up his second win of the day as he turned in a 46.79 to win the 100 Free. Simmons finished in fourth place in 47.49.
• Wachenfeld grabbed a win in the 200 Back with a time of 1:53.67 while graduate student Matt McGough took fourth in 1:57.10.
• Chen followed with his second win, beating the field in the 200 Breast by more than 4.5 seconds (2:05.01). Junior Brandon Stride placed second in 2:09.60, followed closely by freshman Eric Ji third (2:09.72).
• Roddy added another win to his total, taking first in the 500 Free in 4:36.48, and Surprenant finished third in 4:42.48.
• Vitek earned his second win of the day and completed the sweep of the Fly events. He won the 100 with a time of 50.54.
• Rua then placed second in the 200 IM (1:57.11) while Ji took third (1:58.22).
• Hopkins ended the day with second and third-place finishes in the 400 Free Relay. Corbitt, Davenport, Simmons and sophomore Jay Heymann finished in 3:08.46. The team of junior Spencer Ryan, McGough, Ji and Vitek placed third (3:13.39).

Up Next
• Hopkins is back in action on Friday, January 21 as the Blue Jays travel to Washington, DC to take on Georgetown. The meet is scheduled for a 4:00 pm start at McCarthy Pool.
