San Diego State is holding on to a slim lead heading into the final day of the Phill Hansel Invite, leading hosts Houston by 40 points. The Aztecs got out to a great start last night, winning the 200 medley relay decisively. Klara Thormalm was huge for her team, splitting a blistering 26.34 on the breast leg. Riley Tapley led the team off in 25.75, Cassie Phillips swam a 23.46 on fly, and Lizzie Menzmer anchored in 22.31. The team combined for a 1:37.86, touching first by 3.5 seconds.
Klara Thormalm would go on to win the 100 breast in 59.25. It was a 1-2-3 charge by the Aztecs in the event, as Sammy Geyer took 2nd in 1:00.95, and Kristina Murphy 3rd in 1:01.55.
Washington State 5th year Taylor McCoy won the 400 IM in 4:14.58, establishing a new personal best. With the swim, McCoy also broke the Washington State record in the event. McCoy made her mark against the rest of the field on the back and free legs, splitting 1:03.90 and 57.30 respectively.
Rice put their fly group on display, going 1-2 in the 100 fly. Maddy Howe won the event in 52.86, establishing a new lifetime best, and her first sub-53 performance of her career. She was excellent on the 2nd 50, splitting a 27.78. Teammate Arielle Hayon, a freshman, came in 2nd, swimming a personal best of 53.54.
Tulane picked up a win in the 100 back, with Danielle Titus getting her hand on the wall first in a tight race. Titus posted a 54.38, off her personal best of 53.85, which she swam at the 2021 AAC Championships.
Rice’s Ginny Qian, Marta Cano Minarro, Lauren McDougall, and Shannon Campbell teamed up to win the 800 free relay with a 7:17.38. Marta Cano Minarro also won the 200 free earlier in the session, swimming a 1:47.82.
