BALTIMORE – Loyola University Maryland men’s swimming and diving won 15 of 16 events to post its first-ever dual-meet win against Lehigh University, beating the Mountain Hawks at the Mangione Pool at the Fitness and Aquatic Center on Saturday

Max Verheyen won three events, while Caleb Kelly and Jack Still were each double winners as the Greyhounds outscored Lehigh 218-80.

The Mountain Hawks edged the Loyola women, 169-131, in a highly competitive meet as Lily Mead won two races for the Greyhounds.

Verheyen swam the second leg of the opening 200-yard medley relay to help the Greyhounds to a winning time of 1:31.15, combining with Patrick Heyburn, Sung Lee and Kelly. Verheyen then came back to finish first in the 100-yard backstroke and the 200-yard breakstroke and individual medley.

Kelly won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, while Still took first in the 1- and 3-meter diving events.

After the medley relays, Alex Plavoukos led a one-two-three finish for Loyola in the 1,000-yard freestyle, winning by more than eight seconds in 9:45.32. Dylan Champagne (9:53.58) and Jonah Goodman (9:57.55) were second and third to give the Greyhounds 17 points in the race.

Reid then had a win in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.85.

Hayburn was first to the wall for the Greyhounds in the 100-yard backstroke, leading a quartet of Loyola players who were second through fifth. Hayburn finished in 51.13, just ahead of Conor Rutigliano (51.47), Henry Mueller (51.62) and Jonathan Brooks (51.95).

Verheyen had the first of his individual wins in the shorter of the two breaststrokes, winning in 57.11, while teammate Michael Gozdan was second in 58.28. Lehigh’s Connor Sept was third, but Alexander Grahor (59.38) and Zach Eisenmann (59.42) were fourth and fifth for Loyola.

Harry Hearn picked up a victory in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.79, while Reid Hussey (1:54.38) and Ryan Atwood (1:56.73) were third and fourth for the Greyhounds.

Kelly had the first of his two wins in the 50-yard freestyle, racing to the wall in 20.78 for the victory. Jimmy Hayburn took third in 21.50. Kelly came back after the break to win the 100-yard freestyle in 45.62 as Jonathan Brooks was fourth in 47.46.

Still scored 253.42 points in the 1-meter diving for the winning total, as Dan Faunce (198.74), Jeremy Unanue (174.52) and Tyler Zarzycki (156.01) took third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Still later won the 3-meter diving with 278.25 points, and Faunce (211.12), Unanue (207.0) and Zarzycki (162.82) again finished in the same spots.

Mueller and Matt Voight took the top two spots in the 200-yard backstroke, swimming 1:52.06 and 1:55.68, respectively, for the Greyhounds.

Verheyen returned for his second of three individual races in the 200-yard breaststroke, winning in 2:08.27, ahead of Zach Eisenmann (2:09.36), Gozdan (2:10.50) and Greg Sifferman (2:13.77) as Loyola took first through fourth.

Champagne led three Greyhounds in the top three places of the 500-yard freestyle, winning in 4:43.50. Hearn was second in 4:46.09, and Plavoukos finished third in 4:46.23.

Lee captured first place in the 100-yard butterfly, winning in 50.85. Reid Hussey was third (51.32), and Jonathan Brooks fourth 51.38, in a tightly-packed finish.

Verheyen completed his day in the 200-yard individual medley, winning in 1:53.59. Mueller took second with a time of 1:56.81.

Loyola closed with a winning time of 1:23.65 in the 200-yard freestyle relay as Patrick and Jimmy Hayburn led off the first two legs with Hussey and Kelly following.

In the women’s meet, the Greyhounds opened with a medley relay win, as Mead, Abby AndrewsIzzy Barnette and Charley Tulio swan 1:47.43 to beat Lehigh by just two-hundredths of a second.

Gianna Moscetti took second in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:49.46, and Haley Cisewski finished fifth in 11:07.66.

Claire Bowsery and Barnette finished second and third in the 200-yard freestyle with times of 1:58.75 and 1:59.54, respectively. Lauren Joyce was fifth in 2:00.83.

Mead had her first individual win of the day in the 100-yard backstroke, winning by almost three seconds with a time of 55.96. Alison Prushinski finished second in 60.12.

Andrews had a top-five finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, taking fourth in 1:10.63. Molly Davis and Alana Andress were second and third in the 200-yard butterfly, swimming 2:08.79 and 2:09.76, respectively.

Tulio led three Loyola swimmers who were third through fifth in the 50-yard freestyle as she finished third in 24.63. Fay Moser was right behind in 24.95, and Bowser just back of her in 24.95.

Mya Sharkey won the 3-meter diving competition with 236.70 points, while Jess Stolfi (212.92) and Anna Donato (200.92) finished third and fifth.

Bowser (54.29), Avery Stimmel (54.35) and Tulio (54.79) scored with third-, fourth- and fifth-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle.

Mead came back in the 200-yard backstroke to win with a time of 2:03.87, almost four seconds in front of the competition. Stella Meyerhoeffer and Lauren Joyce finished fourth and fifth in 2:10.81 and 2:12.52, respectively.

Allison Wade and Morgan Fuerbacker scored in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing fourth (2:34.33) and fifth (2:39.63), respectively.

Moscetti again had a second-place finish, this time in the 500-yard freestyle with a tie of 5:17.51. Cisewski finished fourth in 5:23.06.

Laura Latham led three Loyola swimmers in second through fourth in the 100-yard butterfly, taking second in 58.96. Barnette was third (59.22), and Elizabeth Walsh finished fourth (59.43).

Sharkey scored 207.45 to edge Donato’s 206.92 for second in the 3-meter diving. Lily Bistline finished fourth in the event with 204.22.

Latham and Barnette scored in the 200-yard individual medley with the former finishing second in 2:12.98 and the latter fourth in 2:15.66.

Loyola won the closing relay, taking top honors in the 200-yard freestyle as Mead, Amanda Cradock, Tulio and Bowser finished just ahead of Lehigh with a time of 1:37.26.

The Greyhounds are back in action next weekend when they host another Patriot League opponent on Saturday, October 23, as Lafayette College visits for a 1 p.m. meet.

BALTIMORE – The 2021-22 season started off with a bang for the Lehigh women’s swimming and diving team, defeating Loyola Maryland, 169-131 to open the new campaign with a 1-0 record. The Mountain Hawks (1-0, 1-0 PL) came away with 11 first place finishes in individual events including three event victories for junior Danielle Prekop and two each for freshman Natalie Martin and fifth year senior Ann Foley.

The first event of the day was the 200-yard medley relay, a second place finish for Lehigh behind a strong swim from the team of Hallie Wilson, Prekop, Sarah Hardy and Noel Fresa finishing with a time of 1:47.45, just .03 away from taking first.

Martin came away with the Mountain Hawks’ first victory of the day in the 1000 free with a dominant time of 10:41.05. Julia Stevens finished in third place at 10:54.85.

Sarah Manthorp picked up another victory and nine points for Lehigh in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:57.05, while Hallie Wilson and Willa Werwaiss went 2-3 in the 100 back event.

The Mountain Hawks got a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 breaststroke, led by the first of three first place finishes for Prekop at 1:07.70. Liz Olszewski finished second at 1:09.71 and Kelsey Thompson picked up a solid third place finish at 1:10.44. Prekop also had a first place finish in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.20) in addition to the 200 individual medley.

Julia Stevens found success with a first place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:07.29), just .50 from second place Molly David from Loyola.

In her first individual event of the day, it was Ann Foley that finished first in the 50 freestyle at 24.01, inching just ahead of Noel Fresa (24.30) in second position. She also finished first in the 100 freestyle at 51.51 ahead of Fresa once again (53.17).

Switching gears over to the diving board, freshman Sarah Gill got a second-place showing in the three-meter dive with a score of 230.92 while Emma Camp finished fourth at 206.40. Gill was the top finisher in the one-meter dive with her high score of 243.07 later in the day.

Natalie Martin’s second first place finish came in the 500 freestyle with her time of 5:17.06. Stevens came in third at 5:18.87.

Sarah Hardy finished first in the 100 butterfly at 57.54 and the day finished with a second place finish for the 200 freestyle relay team of Fresa, Jordan MacDonaldGrace Rogowski and Foley (1:37.56).

The victory propels Lehigh to 8-0 all-time against Loyola Maryland and 1-0 to start the season for the second consecutive season.

The Mountain Hawks have their home opener next weekend at Jacobs Pool, taking on West Chester Friday at 5 p.m. and Rider Saturday at 1 p.m.
