Ava Topolewski from Grand Prairie, Texas has announced her verbal commitment to continue her academic and athletic careers at George Washington University beginning for the 2022-2023 school year.

“I am honored to announce my verbal commitment to study and swim at George Washington University! Thank you to my friends, family, and coaches who have constantly guided and supported me. I’m excited to see what the future will bring! #RaiseHigh”

Topolewski swims for Mansfield Aquatic Club out of Mansfield, Texas. Most recently, she competed at the West Fargo Futures Championships where she dropped 24 seconds to win the 1500 freestyle in a time of 17:02.94. At the same meet, she also placed 3rd in the 400 and 800 freestyles as well as 4th in the 200 butterfly. Her 400 freestyle best time of 4:19.11 earned her first Winter US Open cut. Back in July of 2019, she won the 200 butterfly at the Des Moines Futures Championships in a time of 2:15.78.  This past March, she set best times in the 500 and 1650 freestyles as well as 200 butterfly while at the North Texas Lone Star Invitational.

Topolewski will begin her senior year this fall at Lake Ridge High School in Mansfield, TX. She earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors in both 2019 and 2021. Her best short course times are:

George Washington University is a private university located in Washington, D.C.. The school is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference.

At the 2021 Atlantic 10 Conference Championships, the George Washington women finished 4th out of 10 teams, and the men’s team won their 4th conference title in 5 years. Head Coach Brian Thomas earned the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year award. Junior Erin McCarthy won the 1650 freestyle as well as placed 3rd in the 500 freestyle and 7th in the 200 freestyle. Topolewski will have the potential to score in multiple events at the conference meet. Her best time in the 100 butterfly would have earned her a 5th place finish, and her best times in the 500 and 1650 freestyles as well as the 200 butterfly would have earned her 6th place finishes.

Her best times also would rank her 5th on the all-time top 10 list at George Washington in the 200 butterfly as well as 7th in the 100 butterfly, 8th in the 1650 freestyle, and 9th in the 500 freestyle.

Topolewski joins Phoebe Wright, Julia Miles, and Julia Fifer as members of the class of 2026 that will suit up for George Washington beginning next fall.
