Hwang Sunwoo Continues Standout Olympics With 47.56 100 Free Asian Record

Right off the bat, we saw a continental record go down here in day 4 finals at the Olympic Games, with Korea’s Hwang Sunwoo taking down the men’s 100m free Asian standard en route to making the final.

Posting a time of 47.56, Hwang claimed the 3rd fastest time of the first semi-final and 4th seed overall heading into tomorrow’s final.

Splitting 23.17/24.39, 18-year-old Hwang took down the previous Asian record of 47.65 Chinese world champion Ning Zetao put up at the 2014 Chinese Championships. Ning would take the world title the following hear in Kazan.

Hwang’s time also undercuts his own Korean national record of 47.97 from the heats. That earlier outing marked his first time ever under the 48-second threshold. As such, the man has dropped .32 from his newly-minted lifetime best in a matter of hours.

In the 200 free, Hwang broke the World Junior Record in the prelims in a time of 1:44.62, also breaking Park Tae Hwan‘s Korean Record, and he led the majority of the final on Tuesday morning, ultimately finishing seventh in 1:45.26.
