Joanne Arbic, a 5’11” sprinter from Pickford, Michigan, has announced her verbal commitment to Northern Michigan University for the 2022-23 school year.
“I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Northern Michigan University. Go Wildcats!”
Arbic is a rising senior at Sault Area High School in the Upper Peninsula city of Sault Sainte Marie. She was named to the 2019, 2020, and 2021 All-Upper Peninsula teams and earned the Upper Peninsula Swimmer of the Year distinction in 2020. Arbic wrapped up her junior year season with wins in the 50 free and 100 free at the Upper Peninsula State Championships, going best times in both events.
Arbic does her year-round swimming with Northern Michigan Narwhals. She recently competed at the Beat the Heat Challenge Open Invitational and earned new PBs in the LCM 50 free, 100 free, 200 free, 400 free, and 100 fly.

Arbic will join the Wildcats’ class of 2026 with Paige Carothers. The NMU women edged Wayne State by 8 points to finish second behind Grand Valley State at the 2021 GLIAC Championships. With only two scoring finals for each event, it took 24.85 in the 50 free and 53.48 in the 100 free to earn second swims at this year’s conference meet.
