Ultra Swim Swimmer of the Month is a recurring SwimSwam feature shedding light on a U.S.-based swimmer who has proven themselves over the past month. As with any item of recognition, Swimmer of the Month is a subjective exercise meant to highlight one athlete whose work holds noteworthy context – perhaps a swimmer who was visibly outperforming other swimmers over the month, or one whose accomplishments slipped through the cracks among other high-profile swims. If your favorite athlete wasn’t selected, feel free to respectfully recognize them in our comment section.
In a meet where best times are tough to come by, 18-year-old Torri Huske hit two key personal-bests and booked her first-ever Olympic appearance.
Huske had a banner meet for the Arlington Aquatic Club, qualifying for three finals and five semifinals, including three top-4 finishes.
The headliner, of course, was her American-record win in the 100 fly. Huske entered the meet with a lifetime-best of 56.69. She matched that time in heats, then cut a full second across her two evening swims, going 55.78 in semifinals and 55.66 to win the final and become the fastest American in history.
In a meet where most of the veterans were dropping events to avoid doubles, Huske was one of the rare talents who toughed out a 200 free/200 fly combo. She did it in heats, qualifying to move on in both. And she elected to swim both in semifinals, making the cut in the IM and still placing 11th in the free. She would go on the next day to finish 4th in the IM in a career-best 2:10.38. (That’s a time drop of eight-tenths of a second).
Huske also made the 50 free final, finishing third and just 0.17 seconds out of another Olympic event, even at the end of an extremely busy week. In addition, she was 10th in the 100 free.

Great swimmer and class act.
Well deserved Torri! Congratulations on your breakthroughs & 1st Olympic Team.
I’m very surprised her club coach is not going to Hawaii as well. She’s knocking on the door of a WR.
Hawaii will not allow personal coaches into the state at this time.
Except for the Sandpiper coach and the SYS coach. I think all coaches of potential WR holders should have been invited.
I gotta say I think the 2free/2IM double was misguided the day after the 100 fly final. If she skips those 2 I think she makes either or both of the 100 free (at least a relay spot) or the 50 free.
So was it 200 free and 200 fly or 200 IM combo ?
