On day five of the Para European Championships, Italy’s Arjola Trimi, who competes in the S3 category, cracked the women’s 50 free S3 World Record by more than one second in the 50 free S4 final. Trimi won gold with a time of 41.15, crushing the previous record of 42.21 set by Kazakhstan’s Zulfiya Gabidullina in 2016 who was 51 years old when she set the record.
“It was my last race in Madeira and I wanted to finish with a win, but I couldn’t imagine in my wildest dreams that it would be with a world record,” Trimi told World Para Swimming. “I am very happy.”
Spain’s Antoni Ponce Bertran broke the second World Record of the night, undercutting his own record from December 2020 in the men’s 100 breast SB5 final. He won gold with a time of, 1:25.46 undercutting his previous record by .16.
A quartet of European Records fell during day five, starting in prelims when Italy’s Antonio Fantin broke his own European Record in prelims heats of the men’s S6 50 free with a time of 29.52. He crushed this time by .41 in the finals to win gold (29.11), breaking his European Record from February by a total of .61 in one day.
In the men’s 50 free S4 final, Israel’s Ami Omer Dadaon set a new ER with a time of 37.60, breaking the previous record set by France’s David Smetanine in 2008 at 37.79 to win gold.
Giulia Terzi won another gold for Italy, going 34.95 in the women’s 50 fly S7 final to break the European Record set by Great Britain’s Susannah Rodgers in 2016 by .12. In the men’s 50 fly S7 final, Ukraine’s Andrii Trusov broke the ER by going 29.33. The previous record was 29.35, set by his teammate Yevhenii Bohodaiko in 2016. Bohodaiko finished in 2nd place (30.07).
Brazil’s Gabriel Bandeira earned his fourth Americas record of the meet in the Men’s 200IM SM14 final with a time of 2:10.92.
Team standings after day five in the same order as day four, however, Ukraine is creeping up on Italy, trailing just two gold medals behind them. Two more days of competition remain for them to battle it out.
