From Texas to Alaska, Camillia Samson Commits to Alaska-Fairbanks

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

A native of Cypress, Texas, Camillia Samson has announced she will be heading north for her college career, committing to the NCAA DII University of Alaska-Fairbanks to swim this fall. Samson trains with the Texas Terrapins Swim Team.

I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I am beyond grateful to everyone who has supported me, pushed me and believed in me. I cannot wait to see the new adventures and memories this next chapter will bring, go Nanooks!

A breaststroke specialist, her best times in both the 100 and 200 breast come from the HCAP Invitational in the spring of 2019. She swam to a huge lifetime best in the 100 breast, dropping from 1:15.01, her time from the prelims session of the meet, to 1:13.12 in finals. Prior to the meet, her best time in the event had been 1:16.04. She also added a second-place finish in the 200 breast with another lifetime best time of 2:39.14. Last spring, at the UIL 6A Region 5 Championships meet, she narrowly missed her best time in the 100 breast, finishing in 1:13.93.

  • 200 breast – 2:39.14

Samson will join an Alaska-Fairbanks team that is coming off of a seventh-place finish at the 2021 Pacific Collegiate (PCSC) Swimming Championships. Alaska-Fairbanks had two medalists at the event, with senior Oda Bygdnes winning the 100 fly and sophomore Tori Shoemaker finishing third in the 1000 free. The Nanooks’ breaststroke group was led by junior Whitney McArthur in the 100 and sophomore Caroline McCormick in the 200.  McArthur finished 9th in the 100 with a time of 1:09.17, while McCormick took 10th in the 200 in 2:33.54. While many of the conference’s team elected to compete during the 2020-2021 season, three schools on the women’s side elected not to. The most notable of the three was the defending conference champion, Cal State-East Bay.

At the 2021 PCSC Swimming Championships, Samson, with her best times, would have finished 17th in the 100 breast and 19th in the 200 breast.
