The Deepest Diver in the World

Tanya Streeter lives in Austin, Texas, SwimSwam’s HQ. I’ve heard a lot about her and her husband, but it’s her diving career that mesmerizes. Death is so close in these deep dives, your chest gets tight just watching them. Tanya’s 160 meter world record bested the men’s mark for a short period of time, a notable accomplishment in a sport that takes so much courage.

Tanya appeared on TEDxAustin in 2012. See her talk here:

Via Youtube: Most people can hold their breath for forty seconds, Tanya Streeter can hold her breath for over six minutes. Diving to the ocean floor on a single breath is an ancient skill among pearl and sponge fishermen, but only in the last 20 years has it become an internationally competitive sport. It requires superhuman levels of stamina and fitness.
