BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Southeastern Conference announced the 2021 Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athletes of the Year in conjunction with the 2021 SEC Swimming & Diving Championships.
Chase Lane of Kentucky was selected as the 2021 SEC Men’s Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Lane is a senior from Tallahassee, Fla., majoring in kinesiology with a 3.64 grade point average. He is planning on a pursing post-graduate work in physical therapy in the fall of 2021. A 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials Qualifier, Lane owns the second-best score on platform in school history, recording 424.65 points as a sophomore to earn a silver medal at the 2019 SEC Swimming & Championships. He also owns the seventh-best score on both the 1- and 3-meter springboard in program history (372.60 and 389.90, respectively). In 2020, Lane won the silver medal on platform at the SEC Swimming & Championships and was a two-time All-American on the 1-meter springboard and platform. He was also a member of the 2020 USA Diving High Performance Team. Lane was twice named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America First Team (2018 and 2020) and earned the CSCAA Scholar All-America Honorable Mention in 2019.
Courtney Harnish of Georgia was chosen as the 2021 Women’s Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Harnish is a senior from York, Pa., is a marketing major with a 3.67 grade point average. She is a three-time SEC Champion, earning the gold in the 1650 free in 2018, and in the 500 free in 2019 and 2020. Harnish has earned 10 medals overall at the SEC Swimming & Diving Championships, including five in 2020. She was named to the All-SEC First Team and the SEC Academic Honor Roll in all three seasons. At the NCAA Championships, Harnish finished in eighth place in the 500 free and 13th in the 200 fly in 2019 and in 17th place in the 1650 free in 2018. She qualified for the 2020 NCAA Championships in the 200 free, 500 free and the 200 fly. Harnish has earned 10 CSCAA All-America citations and was twice named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America First Team. She represents the women’s swimming & diving team on the UGA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. Harnish was inducted into the Georgia Way Leadership Education and Development Academy, and has been named to the J. Reid Parker Director of Athletics Honor Roll each semester.
Is there a list of previous winners? I feel like UGA has had several in the last 8-10 years.
Georgia’s last win was in 2017, when Chantal van Landeghem shared it with A&M’s Sarah Henry.
