[Updates from Sunday] – Zone AΒ wrapped on Sunday in Christiansburg, and the Virginia Tech menΒ got their third qualifier, Kyle Butts, into the meet. That will be a big sigh of relief for them; the zone only got 5 male entries this year, but with how well the Hokies were diving, it would’ve been a shame for them to take fewer than three of those. Now they’ll be diving not only for team points, but also for zone spots; with the increase in quality of the Virginia diving crew, this zone is worthy of at least 1-2 more qualifiers for NCAA’s next season.
The Virginia Tech women got their third qualifier as well, with Stockton winning the platform event. Rutgers’ Nicole Scott gave the Scarlett Knights their lone NCAA qualifier with a second place finish.
[Updates from Saturday] – InΒ Zone A,Β thanks to Logan ShinholserΒ from Virginia Tech winning his second event, Virginia’sΒ JBΒ KolodΒ has been moved into the ranks of automatic qualifiers for the NCAA Championships. That leaves just one more spot open headed into platform diving. The top finisher in platform automatically qualifies; if he’s not new, then the 2nd-place finisher qualifies; if neither of them are new, then Virginia Tech would add a third qualifier. The Hokies are diving extremely well in their home pool.
InΒ Zone C, the Indiana women swooped in and gave the Hoosiers two qualifiers, with Amy KozadΒ and Kate Hillman taking 1st and 2nd. This Zone on the women’s side was kind of a “perfect storm,” with not a single diver making two qualifying positions above the cut line. That means that the cut hit right after the 9th line in qualifying.
In the men’s platform, Indiana again dominated, taking five of the top six spots. Conor Murphy ran away with the competition by more than 200 points, and he and teammate Danton Rogers added themselves to the list of NCAA qualifiers. The Hoosiers now have 4 NCAA qualifiers, matching the 4 they sent last year.
InΒ Zone E, things broke exactly the right way for the Stanford Cardinal. Kristian IpsenΒ and Rafael QuinteroΒ went 1-2, and Taylor SishcΒ took 3rd for the Cardinal, meaning that Connor KuremskyΒ also made it to NCAA’s. In the women’s meet, Cal’s Kahley Rowell took 2nd to earn her way to NCAA’s as well. With Georgia getting two diving qualifiers for NCAA’s, getting some points from Rowell will be crucial to the Golden Bears’ attempt at an NCAA Championship three-peat.
[Update from Women’s events on Friday] – InΒ Zone A,Β even with just 6 spots, the Virginia Tech women sit in a good position after a day of competition. With a 1-3 finish on the 3-meter, they already have two into NCAA’s, to go with Danielle CeccoΒ from UConn.
InΒ Zone C, 7 spots under the original cut line so far have gone to 7 different divers. That means platform specialists will again be shorted at NCAA’s, just like we saw in Zones B and D earlier in the week; anyone with good platform divers can count on big points out of them in Indianapolis. Eastern Michigan are the stars of the show so far; after a 1-2 finish on the 1-meter, they’ll send a pair to NCAA’s. There’s 2 spots available in this zone headed into Saturday’s platform event. The only divers eligible for those spots right now are FengtingΒ Chen from Southern Illinois, WentingΒ Zheng from Illinois State, and the top three finishers on platform.
InΒ Zone E, there were a few repeat qualifiers, but also a few new which shrank the qualifying range by quite a lot headed into the platform. Hawaii’s Aimee Harrison and Arizona State’s Morgan Weller were added to the ranks of qualifiers; Weller was bumped in thanks in part to Hailey Casper again placing high on the 1-meter. There’s only two spots open headed into the platform event. Top two on that platform are in automatically, with Utah, and Northern Arizona both having the potential to add their first diving qualifiers if the top three are all already-qualified divers.
[Update from Men’s events on Friday] – In Zone A, things are just getting started on Friday, and with tight qualifying (just 5 men), Virginia Tech picked up their first NCAA-bound diver thanks to a win fromΒ Logan Shinholser, Virginia’s JBΒ Kolod isn’t in yet, but with his 3rd-place finish on the one-meter, he’s put himself in a good position to qualify for NCAA’s, depending on how the rest of the events shake out.
InΒ Zone C, Ferrucci from Kentucky and Schmidt from Indiana took 1-2 in both the 1-meter and the 3-meter, so the NCAA qualifying line moved further down the pecking order. The result is assured second qualifiers for Kentucky, Indiana, and Purdue
In Zone E, Kristin IpsenΒ and the re-emerged Harrison Zones went 1-2 again. That bumped down the qualifying line so that Utah’sΒ Josiah PurssΒ qualified for the meet: just the second male diver to ever qualify for NCAA’s for the Utes. Stanford’s Noah Garcia added a second qualifier for the Cardinal, and they’ve actually got a really good chance to pick up a third qualifier; if Jones, McCormick, and IpsenΒ take at least two of the top three platform spots (highly likely), then Connor KuremskyΒ from Stanford gets in. The top two platform divers are guaranteed spots; third place has a very high probability of qualifying as well. If there’s no new qualifiers among the top three in diving, then the 4th-place platform finisher gets in. And finally, if he too is not a new qualifier, then USC’s Jordan Gear is the last eligible NCAA qualifier. Lots of scenarios left in Zone E.
[Original Notes about Zone Diving and Qualifying Rules] – Below, weβll keep track of the NCAA qualifiers from each Zone. Divers who qualify for NCAAβs are eligible toΒ dive all of the three diving events at NCAAβs, regardless of which one they qualified in, with the caveat that they can only dive an event at NCAAβs if they attempted it at Zones.
Below is the order for qualifiers based on placements. The order is the same for each zone, though each zone is allocated a different number of spots β based on a sliding scale of how well they did the year before.
Legend:
NCAA Qualifying Cutoff As of Now β Everyone above this line has QUALIFIED for the NCAA Championships.
Lowest Theoretical NCAAΒ Qualifier As of Now β Every result above this line has an opportunity to qualify for NCAA Championships, depending on the results of the rest of the events.
The number of divers for each zone is the number of different divers, so as different divers take high spots, the βLowest Theoretical Qualifier As of Nowβ line will move up.

Hi, how are divers qualified for the NCAA;s and conference championships.
Thanks Mike Freeman..(a H.S. diving coach in Peoria, Il.)
IU men are in great shape for NCAA’s with this diving contingent added to the 10 swimming qualifiers. Could be a top 6 finish for the Hoosiers.
