The Maryville University department of athletics announced Bill Nicholson as the new head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach of the Saints programs. He joins Maryville after spending the past three years as the Director of Competitive Swimming at the Waynesboro (Va.) YMCA/Shenandoah Aquatics Club.

“We are very pleased to have Coach Nicholson join our team,” said Lonnie Folks, director of athletics and campus recreation.  “His background, passion and experience at two different college programs is something that I think will bring added value to Maryville and the student-athletes we serve.”

During his time at Waynesboro, Nicholson was responsible for all facets of the YMCA age group swimming program, including recruiting, practice planning and management, budget monitoring, scheduling, community relations, and fundraising. He led three YMCA swimmers to the National Championship meet and a YMCA National Finalist. Nicholson also coached three Virginia age group individual champions and saw his program grow from 47 swimmers in 2017 to a current roster of 77.

Prior to his duties at Waynesboro, he spent 15 years as the head swimming and diving coach at Virginia Military Institute. In his time at VMI, Nicholson was in charge of all facets of the Division I swimming and diving program that earned two Northeast Conference men’s team championships and 11 individual conference champions. He saw his teams earn four CSCAA Academic All-American team honors and an ESPN the Magazine first-team Academic All-American award.
