MEN
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (February 20) – MIT and Springfield College split the opening two events of the 2020 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Swimming and Diving Championship that is being hosted by MIT in the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool.
The Engineers claimed gold in the 800 free relay with a NEWMAC meet, NEWMAC open and pool record time, while Connor Pennington won the 1-meter board with a NEWMAC meet and NEWMAC open record score.
After one night in the pool, Springfield leads in the team standings with 94 points and MIT is second with 91. Coast Guard ranks third with 75, Babson is fourth with 67, WPI is fifth with 60, Clark is sixth with 50 and Wheaton is seventh with 44.

The men will compete in the 200-yard freestyle relay, the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard IM, the 50-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay trial beginning tomorrow at 10:00 am. Finals are set to begin at 6:00 pm.
WOMEN
THE BASICS:

– The Lead: The MIT women’s swimming and diving team began the 2020 New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Championship by breaking the meet record in the 800 free relay with a time of 7:31.04.
After one day in the pool, the Engineers lead in the team standings with 70 points and are followed by WPI with 56 points as well as Wheaton College and Coast Guard with 54 points.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
– The ‘A’ 800 free relay comprised of junior Hannah Mahaffey (Lawrenceville, Ga.) as well as sophomores Lindsey Bjornstad (Mequon, Wis.), Laura Rosado (Lake Bluff, Ill.) and Shannon Hagmaier (Longwood, Fla.) took home the 2020 conference title with a NEWMAC meet record and NCAA ‘B’ cut time of 7:31.04.
– The ‘B’ 800 free relay quartet of first-year Shirley Li (Honolulu, Hawaii), sophomore Jasmin Bouzarouata (Astoria, N.Y.), first-year Caroline Warren (Scotch Plains, N.Y.) and first-year Callie Kunz (Woodbury, Minn.) finished first in their heat with a time of 7:45.96.
– In time trials, senior Kayla Holman (Menlo Park, Calif.) registered an NCAA ‘B’ cut in the 200-fly with a time of 2:03.95
UP NEXT:
– The Engineers return to the pool tomorrow morning for the second day of the 2020 NEWMAC Championship. Swimming prelims begin at 10:00 am, diving prelims begin at 1:00 pm and finals start at 6:00 pm. Events scheduled for tomorrow include the 3-meter dive, 200-free relay, 500-free, 200-IM, 50-free and the 400-medley relay.
