Cleveland State Men Top Kenyon, Lord Women Edge Vikings By Single Point

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams closed their regular seasons by hosting Kenyon Saturday inside the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

The CSU men claimed a 134-108 win over the Lords while the Viking women fell in a nail-biter, 114-113, to the Ladies. Cleveland State celebrated its 15-member senior class during a break in the dual meet.

Junior Matt Akers posted a pair of NCAA Zone qualifying scores in both diving events to lead the CSU men. He won the 3-meter with 338.55 points to begin the meet before topping the field in the 1-meter with 307.58 points.

Senior Antony Styrt (315.23, 275.48) and junior Trevor Mahoney (291.45, 261.68) took second and third in both 3-meter and 1-meter, respectively, with Styrt coming close to a Zones score in 3-meter.

Senior Dominic Poletta won an individual event and also swam on two winning relays for the Vikings. He claimed first in the 50 freestyle in 20.62 seconds and swam on first-place 200 medley and 400 free relays.

In the 200 medley relay, junior Dominic Niedzialek led off, sophomore Jack Krusinski was second, Poletta was third and senior Jack MacDonald anchored the group as they finished in 1:29.38, a season best for CSU.

Poletta, DJ ArslanianTyler Stevenson and MacDonald, an all-senior relay, won the 400 free relay in 2:59.25, a season best for CSU. MacDonald came from behind to pick up the win as he split 44.69 to close the race. Poletta’s lead split of 44.78 seconds is the fastest 100 free swim by a Viking this season.

Krusinski and Stevenson added individual event wins in addition to swimming on a winning relay.

Krusinski took first in the 200 breaststroke in 2:00.90, beating the field by over three seconds. Stevenson won the 200 freestyle in 1:40.35, a career best and the fastest by a Viking this season, while Niedzialek (1:41.07) and Krusinski (1:41.57) took second and third.

Niedzialek added a runner-up showing in the 500 freestyle in 4:33.43.

Junior Timothy Kubacki won the 200 backstroke in 1:47.23 and was second in the 200 IM in 1:51.36.

Arslanian was the runner-up in the 100 free (45.74), just ahead of MacDonald (46.04) and junior Ryan Sedlak (46.08), who posted a career best. Junior Alec Bowie took second in the 1000 freestyle in 9:34.51, a season best.

Juniors Erica Henrichsen and Lexie Kostelnik led the way for the CSU women by each winning two individual events.

Henrichsen swept the diving boards, winning the 3-meter with 260.17 and claiming the 1-meter with 213.97 points. Her 3-meter score is her best this calendar year and less than a point off her career best.

Kostelnik swept the distance freestyle events in dominating fashion. She won the 1000 in 10:12.48, taking first by nearly 12 seconds, and finished first in the 500 in 5:00.17, over two seconds clear of the field. Kostelnik’s 1000 free effort was a new career best. Freshman Rachel Contich was second in the 500 free in 5:02.61.

Senior Gabriella Marinelli won a race in her final regular-season meet as she led a dominant CSU showing in the 200 free. She took first in 1:52.60, a season-best, and was followed thereafter by four more Vikings.

Junior Sule van der Merwe was second in a season-best time (1:53.41), Contich was third in a season-best time (1:53.98), junior Irena Weclawiak was fourth (1:54.26) and freshman Karen Argie was fifth (1:56.63).

Sophomore Agnes Bahr, junior Alana Cartwright and senior Lauren Frank each posted one runner-up finish and one third-place showing.

Bahr was runner-up in the 200 back in a season-best time (2:03.57) and placed third in the 200 IM (2:06.93). Cartwright was second in the 200 IM (2:06.05) and third in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.52), the latter of which was a season best. Frank was runner-up in the 100 free (52.64), in a season-best time, and took third in the 50 free (24.40).

Junior Libby Smith was second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:20.93 while sophomore Stephanie Sipple was the runner-up in the 200 butterfly in 2:04.02, a season best.

Senior Chuchu Yang, Cartwright, junior Shaw Barney and Marinelli took second in the 200 medley relay (1:43.85) while Contich, Weclawiak, senior Madi Jaszcz and Marinelli were runners-up in the 400 free relay (3:30.68). Both relay times marked new season bests for CSU.

Cleveland State will take a few weeks off from competition before heading to the Horizon League Championships Feb. 19-22.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Kenyon men tallied multiple event wins but came up a little bit short as NCAA Division I Cleveland State University earned a 134-108 dual-meet victory against the Lords on Saturday. 

Kenyon had contributions from across its roster starting first from the 200-yard medley relay team. Ben BaturkaLuis WeekesCheran De Silva and Tommy Weiss teamed up to take the runner-up spot in a ‘B’ cut time of 1:29.71. That was just 0.33 seconds off of first. 

Senior Connor Rumpit then delivered the team’s first win. In the 1,000-yard free, he posted a season-best mark of 9:23.83. Rumpit doubled up on the long-distance events later, winning the 500 in 4:29.03. That also made ‘B’ cut standards. 

Following David Fitch’s runner-up finish in the 50 free (20.71), in which he was just 0.09 seconds away from first, senior Mick Bartholomew added the team’s third win. In the 200 individual medley, Bartholomew touched the wall in 1:50.21, another ‘B’ cut. 

De Silva, a newcomer, earned an individual victory, as well, for the Lords. Competing in the 200-yard butterfly, he clocked a personal-best time of 1:48.89 while Fitch claimed second place. Both marks met ‘B’ cut standards. 

Kenyon’s final win came from Weiss. He won by 0.02 seconds in the 100-yard free with a mark of 45.72. 

There were also three more runner-up finishes for Kenyon: Bartholomew in the 200 back (1:48.38); Kieran Allsop in the 200 breast (2:04.31); and Weiss, Fitch, De Silva and Chris Rutter in the 400 free relay (2:59.25). All those times met ‘B’ cut standards. 

In diving competition, Mason Fishell took fourth on the 1-meter board while Drew Albrecht earned the same placement on the 3-meter. 

The team will now prepare for the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship (NCAC) which is set to begin on February 12 at Denison University’s Trumbull Aquatics Center. 

CLEVELAND – In the final dual meet of its 2019-20 season, the Kenyon College Ladies swimming and diving team escaped Cleveland State University with a 114-113 win over the host Vikings on Saturday morning. The victory finalized the Ladies’ record at 6-4.

Juniors Caylee Hamilton and Crile Hart powered the Ladies, both racking up wins in three events. Hamilton won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.65, finishing just ahead of teammate Emmie Mirus, who took second place in 23.86. Later, Hamilton was victorious in the 100-yard freestyle, finishing in 51.67. Both Hamilton’s times were season-bests and cleared NCAA ‘B’ cuts.

Between those two wins, Hart claimed first place in the 200-yard individual medley, clocking in at 2:00.01, a time that was six seconds quicker than the second-place finisher from Cleveland State. Three events later, Hart won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:59.01.

Hamilton and Hart also found themselves competing with winning relay teams. At the start of the meet, Hamilton joined Mirus, Summer Otazu and Makena Markert to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:42.16. At the end of the meet, Hart swam with Mirus, Ania Axas and Alexandra White to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:27.55.

The Ladies had two other individual event wins and those came from Axas, a freshman, and Andrea Perttula, a sophomore. Axas was first in the 200-yard butterfly and Perttula was fastest in the 200-yard breaststroke. Their respective times of 2:03.78 and 2:18.97 were season-bests and cleared NCAA ‘B’ cuts.

The Ladies now turn their attention to the North Coast Athletic Conference championship meet, a four-day event that begins Wednesday, February 12 at Denison University.

De Silva is gonna be deadly at NCs. 20-point fly split and a 1:48.8 in a dual meet? Putting D3 records on watch this year!
