– The Lead: In a double-dual meet that featured three of the top-ten teams in all of Division III women’s swimming and diving, No. 8 MIT split with No. 5 NYU and No. 10 Williams College this afternoon in Western Massachusetts.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
– The 400-medley relay team comprised of sophomore Laura Rosado (New Haven, Conn.), first-year Edenna Chen (Colorado Springs, Colo.), junior Hannah Mahaffey (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and sophomore Shannon Hagmaier (Longwood, Fla.) came in second place in the meet’s opening event as they clocked a time of 3:55.43.
– All four Engineers in the opening relay had strong individual performances in the pool as well. Chen swept the breaststroke events with two NCAA “B” cut times as she was victorious in both the 100-breast in 1:04.50 and the 200-breast in 2:20.76. Rosado, meanwhile, registered a pair of runner-up finishes in the backstroke events as she clocked times of 58.58 in the 100-back and 2:05.59 in the 200-back.
– Hagmaier picked up MIT’s final individual swimming event win of the day as she touched the wall first in the 100-free in 52.73.
– In the diving well, MIT had two student-athletes come away with victories and qualifying scores for the NCAA Division III Northeast-North Diving Regional. Senior Blake Zhou (Palo Alto, Calif.) won the 3-meter board with a score of 324.60 and finished third on the 1-meter board with a score of 283.94, while junior Deborah Wen (Honolulu, Hawaii) won the 1-meter board with 289.87 points.
– MIT’s 200-free relay squad of Hagmaier, Chen, sophomore Lindsey Bjornstad (Mequon, Wis.) and senior Lilia Staszel (Brighton, Mich.) edged out the “A” relay team from Williams by 0.01-seconds to claim the final event of the day with a time of 1:36.93. Right behind the “A” team from Williams was MIT’s “B” team of first-year Jennifer Xiong (Buffalo Grove, Ill.), junior Olivia McGrath (Chevy Chase, Md.), Mahaffey and senior Delaney Burns (Scituate, Mass.) in 1:40.27.
– Earlier in the meet, Bjornstad posted a runner-up finish in the 50-free in 24.71, while junior Sara Nicholas (Wilmette, Ill.) placed third in the 100-breast in 1:08.10 and first-year Angelina Zhang (New York, N.Y.) placed third in the 400-IM in 4:36.71.
UP NEXT:
– MIT will travel to No. 6 Tufts University for a dual meet with its crosstown rivals tomorrow beginning at 1:00 pm. The Jumbos will host the swimming portion of the meet, while the diving will take place inside the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center Pool on the campus of MIT at the same time.
