Nathan Griffin, a junior at Ponderosa High School and a member of the University of Denver Hilltoppers swim club, has made his verbal commitment to swim for the University of Minnesota in the fall of 2021. A backstroke specialist, Griffin will be joining a Gophers’ team that will be looking for a backstroker that will compliment breaststroke stud Max McHugh on their medley relays; but will only have one year of overlap to do so.

At the 2019 Colorado High School 5A Boys State Championship meet in May, Griffin took 15th place in the 50-yard freestyle (22.13) and took home the bronze medal in the 100-yard backstroke (49.48). At the Speedo Winter Junior Championship West mee, Griffin took 29th in the 100-yard backstroke (49.37) and 36th in the 200-yard backstroke (1:48.71).

Last year at the NCAA Championship meet, Matthew Thomas led off the Gophers’ 200-yard medley relay with a 22.56 while the current high school junior Griffin has a career-best 50-yard backstroke time of 23.18. Griffin is the first confirmed member of the Golden Gophers’ class of 2025.
