Toledo Women Top Indianapolis, Findlay, Greyhound Men Defeat Oilers

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Toledo women’s swimming and diving team defeated the University of Indianapolis (123-118) and Findlay (155-80) Monday night in a tri-meet hosted by the University of Indianapolis.

Sophomore diver Joelle Gallais brought home first-place finishes on both diving boards. Gallais took first on the three-meter board, scoring a 247.50, over 30 points more than second place from Indianapolis. Gallais also took first on the one-meter board with a 254.77. Freshman Lina Alli competed well in the diving well, taking fourth on both boards.

Three individuals took home first-place finishes in their respective swimming events. Junior Izzy Jones continued to shine for the Rockets, placing first in the 200 freestyle. Sophomore Kendra Polewski finished fourth in the event. Freshman Lauren Kilgore continued to be successful in her rookie campaign, taking first in the 200 IM at 2:05.63. Junior Lisa Eriksson led the way for the Rockets in the 100 freestyle, taking first with a 52.98. Finishing just behind was freshman Ashley Lefever (second), and sophomores Ashley Jeffreys (third) and Kendra Polewski (fourth).

Sophomore Samantha Ekleberry placed second in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle. Senior Duda Sales earned some points to help the Rockets’ win, placing second in the 100 butterfly.

The Rockets took second in the 200 freestyle relay. The relay team of Eriksson, Sales, Jones, and Kennedy Lovell swam a 1:37.71 in the event, finishing just ahead of teammates Alida RamdenFlory Kock, Jeffreys, and Polewski. Toledo also took third in the 200 medley relay. Jeffreys, Bec Welke, Sales, and Lovell touched in the wall in 1:46.77.

The diving team will resume competition in early January, competing at the annual Buffalo Diving Invite hosted by the University at Buffalo. The swimming team will be back in action on Jan. 16 at Ball State.

Indianapolis, Ind. – The University of Findlay men’s and women’s swimming and diving team competed in a tri meet against the University of Indianapolis and Toledo University on Monday, December 16. The men’s team was defeated by the score of 172 to 67 to the University of Indianapolis. For the women’s team, they were defeated by Toledo by the score of 155 to 80, and also were defeated by Indianapolis by the score of 150 to 85.

Men’s Results: 

The men’s 200 yard medley relay team of freshman Timothy Stollings, senior Isaac Stretch, freshman Alex Wisler, and freshman Colin Martin took first place with a time of 1:30.78.

Sophomore Paul Pavala zoomed across the finish line in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 50.21, which was good enough for first place. Stollings placed second with a time of 51.29. Stollings also placed second in the 50 yard freestyle race, clocking in at 21.27.

In the 200 yard freestyle relay, the team of Martin, senior Trent Williams, Wisler, and junior Nathan Bourne got second place in the event with a time of 1:24.34.

Martin clocked in at 50.36 in the 100 yard butterfly, placing him second in the event while Bourne got a time of 1:57.84 in the 200 yard IM race, placing him second.

In the 100 yard breaststroke, senior Adam Stretch placed second with a time of 57.39. Isaac Stretch got fourth place, clocking in at 1:00.46, while sophomore Jared Toaz placed fifth with a time of 1:02.04.

Williams placed third in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:43.93.

Women’s Results:

The women’s 200 yard medley relay team consisting of sophomore Chris McFarland, senior Hannah Cedarholm, senior Katy Kouvaris, and sophomore Kristina Coleman took first place with a time of 1:44.91. The B team of junior Payton Zess, freshman Rachel Poling, junior Ashton Klopp, and senior Lauren Blanchard took fifth place with a time of 1:49.97.

In the 200 yard freestyle, the Oilers placed fourth with the team of Kouvaris, freshman Megan Irwin, Blanchard, and Poling with a time of 1:41.75.

Cederholm snagged first place in the 100 yard breaststroke, clocking in at 1:03.19, which qualifies her for the B standard for the NCAA national championships, and is also the fourth fastest mark in GMAC history. Coleman wasn’t far behind as she got fourth place with a time of 1:07.50. Cedarholm also placed third in the 200 yard IM, as she clocked in with a time of 2:06.96.

In the 1000 yard freestyle, Irwin placed fourth in the event with a time of 10:50.05. Senior Sydney Zimdars was right behind Irwin, finishing sixth with a time of 11:10.83. Irwin also placed fourth in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:20.03. Junior Murphy Vance got fifth place, clocking in at 5:21.92.

McFarland snatched first place in the 100 yard backstroke, clocking in at 57.74. Zess got fifth place with a time of 59.25. To add to that, McFarland finished in third place in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 24.58. Coleman was inches behind as she got fourth place with 24.63.

Kouvaris grabbed fourth place in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 58.57. Ashton Klopp finished in fifth place with a time of 59.86.

The Oilers will be off through the holidays and the New Year, as their next contest will take place on Friday, January 10 as they will host Ashland. That meet is set to start at 6:00 PM.

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy swimming & diving teams stayed out of the snow on Monday and competed in a tri-meet with Toledo and Findlay in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center. The men were a step ahead of the Oilers, outlasting them on a final score of 172-67. The women ended the meet taking the win against Findlay (150-85), but suffering their first dual-meet loss of the season to Toledo (123-118).

“All five teams provided some great racing going into winter break,” noticed Head Coach Jason Hite. “We’ll have to stay focused on our training during the break so we can be a force come February and March.”

Diving continued to be a emphasis on the Greyhounds, as they swept the men’s events and placed second and third on the women’s boards. The men had two different winners, with Cade Hammond outlasting the field on a final score of 331.65 on one-meter and Payton Staman claiming the three-meter with 297.52 points. Cassie Kury led the women, placing second on both the one-meter and three-meter. Her one-meter score totaled to 248.02 points, and her three-meter contained a final of 214.72 points.

Senior Melanie Arnold kicked off the Greyhounds’ individual events with a victory in the women’s 1000 free. The New Jersey native touched the wall on a final time of 10:30.41. Freshman Noah Jamison replied with a win in the men’s event, as his 9:47.51 final time was one of his best performances in the regular season.

The Greyhounds had three straight events where student-athletes emerged victorious, with the men even taking the top two spots in the 200 free. Christian Hedeen led the way with a dominant 1:42.67, while Kael Yorke was shortly behind on a finish of 1:43.71. Leticia Vaselli and Jan Zuchowicz combined to sweep the 50 free for the Greyhounds, with Vaselli finishing on top of the women’s event with a time of 24.24 and Zuchowicz slamming home a 20.94 time.

“Both on the boards and in the pool, we looked incredibly strong,” explained sophomore Andrew Rottinghaus. “It was great to see two teams push us to our limits and challenge us before February and March.”

Cody Liske showed his versatility in this meet for the Greyhounds, claiming the men’s 200 IM on a thrilling 26.37 free split. Liske’s 1:57.31 overall time was good for his fastest career 200 IM finish. Darian Murray and Yorke paired up for another sweep for the Greyhounds, this one coming in the 100 fly. Murray came home on a strong final 50 yards, as the senior finished on a final time of 56.79 for the victory. Yorke’s time was the only one under 50 seconds, as he ended the race in 49.36.

Victor Antonon continued a dominant senior campaign, taking flight in the 100 free for another victory. Antonon ended around a second and a half ahead of the field with a final time of 46.48. UIndy showed more strength with their distance crew, once again sweeping the meet on both sides in the 500 free. Sasha Shatskikh ran the show for the women, providing the fastest 100 yards in the field for a final time of 5:07.77. Liske’s 4:49.05 time credited him with a second win on the day, claiming the men’s side of the 500.

UIndy finished strong to take the final three events of the meet, including the men’s 100 breast, women’s 200 free relay and the men’s 200 free relay. Zuchowicz finished on top of the men’s 100 breast, boasting the only second-50 split under 30 seconds for a final time of 56.53.

The women showcased a stellar 200 free relay, featuring Shatskikh, Johanna Buys, Murray and Krystal Caylor to bring the Greyhounds a 1:37.5 time. The men capped off a stellar day with two members of the relay under 21-second splits, finalizing a 1:23.8 victory. The relay consisted of Antonon, I’Likai Crompton-EnglishJeron Thompson and Hedeen.

“We competed hard in every event with everything we had today,” noted sophomore Ally Lunzmann. “At this point of the season we’re all exhausted, but we kept pushing ourselves throughout the entirety of the meet.”

The Greyhounds will spend the holidays training for the upcoming championship season and will first compete in a top-10 heavy DII quad meet the second weekend of 2020. UIndy host Davenport, Lindenwood and Grand Valley State on January 11 at 2 p.m. in the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center.
