SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara men’s and women’s swim teams both took down MPSF opponent UC San Diego on Saturday afternoon at Campus Pool. The men (3-0, 2-0) won by a score of 145 to 117, while the women (2-1, 2-0) finished at 143.5 to 113.5.
Head Coach Matt Macedo was proud of his teams’ performance in the second home meet of the season for the men, and the first for the women. “Today’s meet was a great win and our final rehearsal for our winter invite in a couple weeks. The women were led by Emily Boggess and Zoe Cosgrove,” said Macedo. “It was great to have our women’s captain Heaven Quintana back after battling an injury this fall. She had a big split on the medley relay along with a win in the 100 Breaststroke. On the men’s side, Dominic Falcon, Kian Brouwer, Zach Shenkin, and Joe Lastelic all had big wins.”
To start the day, in the 200 Medley Relay, the women’s “A” team took first place with a time of 1:42.00 and the “C” team took third with a time of 1:45.03. The men’s “A” team won first (1:30.61) and the “B” team took third (1:33.76). In the final event of the day, the 200 Free Relay, the men’s “A” team won first with a time of 1:21.83, and the “B” team won third, finishing in 1:25.46.
Falcon had a standout performance, taking first in the 500 Free (4:33.64) and also the 200 IM (1:52.71), the second of which was a particularly important race, as the teams were separated by only 10 points going into the second to last men’s race of the day.
The senior Lastelic also took home a first-place win in the 1650 Free (15:50.85).
Macedo praised both Lastelic and Falcon, saying “Falcon had two big wins for us and Lastelic has been sick for most of the week so to see him swim so well in the 1650 is a credit to his hard work this fall.”
As Macedo mentioned, Brouwer also had a strong showing, with a first-place finish in the 100 Free (45.18), second place in the 100 Fly (49.57), and third place in the 200 Free (1:40.19).
Sophomores Shenkin and Dan Marella impressed, as Shenkin touched first in the 200 Fly (1:50.66) and Marella finished second in both the 200 Breast (2:03.24) and 200 IM (1:53.52).
Jolen Griffin, Marcello Quarante, and Justin Nguyen each had second and third place wins.
Christian Martinez finished second in the 50 Free (20.62), and Doug Nogueira and Tony Moore each added third place wins.
On the women’s side, Boggess and Cosgrove dominated, combining for five first place finishes. Boggess won the 1650 Free (16:48.69), 200 Free (1:49.87), and 500 Free (4:55.08), and Cosgrove touched the wall first in the 100 and 200 Back (54.81 and 1:58.49).
The senior Quintana finished first in the 100 Breast (1:02.57) and second in the 200 Breast (2:18.48).
Freshman Maya Lee and senior Emily Ward were also first place finishers, Lee in the 200 Fly (2:04.01) and Ward in the 100 Free (51.79). Ward also took a second-place win in the 200 Free with a time of 1:50.63.
Gillian Flath, Molly McCance, Bryn McGowan, Elena England, and Jaqueline Harris each contributed second place wins. Tara Middleton, Rachel Forbes, Dora Seggelke, and Brittney Straw rounded out the Gaucho women with third place victories.
The Gauchos have a two-week break from competition before returning to action at the A3 Invitational at East Los Angeles College over the weekend of Friday, Nov. 22 to Sunday, Nov. 24.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The men’s and women’s swim and dive team swam competitive races against UC Santa Barbara but came up short against the Gauchos. The men fell 145-117 while the women fell 143.5-113.5. Despite the loss, the Tritons demonstrated their continued growth. Last season, both sides fell by over 100 points.
MEN
Spencer Daily won both of his individual events. He won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.48 seconds and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.26.
Edgar Chin was the Tritons second double winner of the day with wins in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke. In the 200-yard breaststroke, chin came from behind to secure the win with a time of 2:03.23, just .01 second faster than second place.
Ivan Kurakin had three top ten times on the day. Kurakin beat out Tyler James in the 200-yard backstroke. Kurakin also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle and right behind Graham Hauss in the 200-yard freestyle.
WOMEN
Brittney Miles secured the women’s first win of the day, touching first in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.65 seconds. Miles came in third in the 100-yard freestyle, right behind teammate Cody Hargadon.
Katja Pavicevic continued her incredible freshman campaign with wins in the 200-yard IM and 200-yard breaststroke. She also came in second for the 100-yard breaststroke.
Jordan Phillips added another first place finish for the Tritons and won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 56.59.
The women will have a quick turnaround and host NCAA runner-up’s Cal.
