Ultra Swim Swimmer of the Month: Sherridon Dressel, Florida

Ultra Swim Swimmer of the Month is a recurring SwimSwam feature shedding light on a U.S.-based swimmer who has proven themselves over the past month. As with any item of recognition, Swimmer of the Month is a subjective exercise meant to highlight one athlete whose work holds noteworthy context – perhaps a swimmer who was visibly outperforming other swimmers over the month, or one whose accomplishments slipped through the cracks among other high-profile swims. If your favorite athlete wasn’t selected, feel free to respectfully recognize them in our comment section.

September isn’t a very busy month of swimming for most Americans. But for Sherridon Dressel it was.

The Florida women swam dual meets on Thursday, Friday and Saturday last week, and Dressel starred. Here’s a look at each of her 9 swims between the three meets. Career-bests are bolded:

Meet Event Time Best Time Last September
Career-Best as of last week
@ FIU 9/26 100 back 52.87 55.54 50.93
@ FIU 9/26 50 back (relay leadoff) 24.91 25.69 25.25
@ FIU 9/26 50 free (relay split) 22.36
@ Miami 9/27 100 free 49.89 50.25 48.65
@ Miami 9/27 100 fly 53.21 55.66 53.84
@ Miami 9/27 100 free (relay split) 49.10
@FAU 9/28 50 back (relay leadoff) 24.38 25.69 25.25
@FAU 9/28 50 free 22.89 23.41 22.41
@FAU 9/28 100 free (relay split) 49.23

Dressel is light years ahead of where she was at this point last season. Her 100 back and 100 fly are more than two seconds faster than she was in September of 2018, and her sprint freestyles are both proving roughly half a second faster. Maybe most impressive were her two lifetime-bests in the 50 back leading off Florida’s medleys. Last year, they used Dressel on fly of the 200 medley relay in the postseason, but with freshman Talia Bates swimming pretty well in fly, Dressel might be a solid leadoff option.
